A Ceremony of Tradition and Reflection

The convocation ceremony began with a traditional Academic Procession, showcasing the members of the Academic Council of ISI. This was followed by a heartfelt rendition of the Vedic Hymn by students and staff, setting a solemn tone for the proceedings. Prof. Sankar Kumar Pal delivered the Opening Address, emphasizing the significance of the degrees awarded. He reminded the graduates that their education comes with responsibilities. As members of a privileged group, they have the duty to use their knowledge to uplift those who are less fortunate.

Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, the Director of ISI, presented the Annual Review, which detailed the Institute’s academic achievements over the past year. Following this, Dr. Saurabh Garg addressed the audience, underscoring the vital role of official statistics in evidence-based policy-making. Dr. Garg encouraged the graduates to leverage their skills to contribute to this transformative journey. His remarks highlighted the importance of timely and reliable statistics in shaping government policies, reinforcing ISI’s role as a key partner in this endeavor.

Insights from a Nobel Laureate

The highlight of the ceremony was the Convocation Address delivered by Prof. Abhijit Banerjee. He acknowledged the rich legacy of ISI and urged the graduates to apply their learnings to create opportunities for various segments of society. His call to action resonated with the audience, inspiring the graduates to think critically about their roles in the world.

The ceremony culminated in the awarding of degrees and diplomas to 470 students across various programs, including Ph.D., M.Tech., M.Stat., and B.Stat. The recognition of outstanding academic performance through prizes and medals added to the celebratory atmosphere. Prof. Biswabrata Pradhan, Dean of Studies at ISI, concluded the event with a Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the ceremony.

The Legacy and Future of ISI

Founded in 1931 by the legendary statistician Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis, ISI has established itself as a premier institution in the fields of statistics, mathematics, and economics. Over the years, it has evolved from a small research institute into a globally recognized center of excellence. ISI’s primary objective is to promote the advancement of statistical sciences, provide high-quality education, and conduct cutting-edge research.

The Delhi Centre of ISI, inaugurated in 1974, has become a hub for academic programs and research activities in northern India. It offers a range of postgraduate programs and has recently introduced a Bachelor in Statistical Data Science (BSDS) program. As the Delhi Centre celebrates its Golden Jubilee, the decision to hold the convocation ceremony there marks a significant moment in ISI’s history. This event not only honors the graduates but also reinforces ISI’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and contributing to India’s statistical infrastructure.
