Strengthening Healthcare Standards Through Collaboration

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently hosted its Annual Convention focused on the healthcare sector. This event brought together deans, heads of departments, and faculty members from various academic institutions and research organizations. The convention aimed to foster collaboration between academia and industry to enhance standardization in healthcare. Director General of BIS, Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in driving innovation and economic growth.

The Importance of Academia-Industry Collaboration

Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari highlighted the necessity of collaboration between academic institutions and the industry. He stated that such partnerships are crucial for developing standards that can drive innovation and economic growth. The convention served as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of standardization in the healthcare sector.

Around 36 participants from 28 different institutions attended the event. They included deans, heads of departments, faculty members, and experts from research organizations. This diverse representation underscored the significance of engaging various stakeholders in the standardization process. The convention aimed to explore opportunities for collaboration that would strengthen BIS’s standardization activities in healthcare.

BIS aims to make Indian Standards more usable and relevant, not just for industries and consumer groups, but also for academic institutions. By engaging with these institutions, BIS seeks to promote a greater understanding of standards and encourage active participation in their development. This initiative is essential for ensuring that standards are aligned with the latest advancements in research and technology.

Key Highlights from the Convention

During the convention, Shri Tiwari addressed the attendees, emphasizing the need to strengthen India’s manufacturing base in the healthcare sector. He discussed the appointment of ‘Chairs’ of standardization in academic institutions and the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance collaboration. These initiatives are designed to facilitate knowledge sharing and improve the quality of standards in healthcare.

Shri Tiwari also urged experts to participate actively in BIS technical committees. He encouraged them to engage in research and development projects and integrate standards into engineering curricula. This approach aims to enhance learning and ensure that future professionals are well-versed in the importance of standards in healthcare.

The challenges of a limited manufacturing base and restricted research capabilities were also addressed. Shri Tiwari emphasized the need to align with the Prime Ministerโ€™s vision of making Indian Standards globally recognized. This alignment is crucial for enhancing the competitiveness of Indian products in the international market.

Engaging the Research Community

Shri Chandan Bahl, Scientist-G and Deputy Director General of International Relations, welcomed the delegates and highlighted the importance of creating timely and scientifically advanced standards. He emphasized that academia and research organizations are vital stakeholders with the latest technical know-how in the field.

The convention marked the beginning of a new engagement with the research community. It aimed to take knowledge of standards further into research communities and scholars. This engagement is essential for ensuring that the standards developed are relevant and effective in addressing current challenges in healthcare.

Shri Deepak Aggarwal, Scientist-F and Head of Standards Coordination & Monitoring Department, provided an overview of BIS and its activities. He shared key achievements and digital initiatives aimed at improving the interpretation of standards. Additionally, Shri Chinmay Dwivedi, Scientist-E & Head of Medical Equipment & Hospital Planning Department, informed the audience about the activities related to standards formulation in the healthcare sector.
