Empowering Women in India’s Maritime Sector

The maritime industry plays a crucial role in India’s economy and global presence. Recently, Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Shantanu Thakur, highlighted the importance of women in this sector. He emphasized that women seafarers are essential to India’s maritime strength, showcasing resilience and excellence on the global stage. This recognition comes as part of a broader initiative aimed at supporting female seafarers who often face unique challenges while working far from home.

Launch of “Sagar Mein Yog” and “Sagar Mein Samman”

On Thursday, Shri Shantanu Thakur officially launched the logos and themes for two significant initiatives: “Sagar Mein Yog โ€“ Complete Wellness Programme” and “Sagar Mein Samman.” The event took place at The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) in Mumbai. These initiatives aim to celebrate and support women seafarers, acknowledging their contributions and addressing the challenges they encounter in their careers.

“Sagar Mein Samman” is designed to enhance the role of women in the maritime industry. It focuses on fostering respect and empowerment, ensuring that women can navigate their careers with dignity and pride. Meanwhile, “Sagar Mein Yog” emphasizes wellness by integrating yoga and well-being practices into maritime training and operations. This approach aims to support seafarers at every stage of their careersโ€”before, during, and after their voyages. By prioritizing wellness, the program seeks to help seafarers remain resilient and balanced, ready for the challenges of their profession.

The Connection Between Yoga and Maritime Heritage

During the launch, Shri Thakur highlighted the deep connection between yoga and Indian heritage. He noted that the “Sagar Mein Yog” initiative is particularly significant for the over 300,000 active seafarers in India. These individuals often face unique challenges while serving far from home, making wellness programs essential for their mental and physical health.

As global ambassadors of India, seafarers represent the nation’s resilient spirit and maritime excellence. The integration of yoga into their training and daily routines can provide them with tools to manage stress and maintain their well-being. This holistic approach not only benefits the individuals but also enhances the overall performance and safety of the maritime workforce.

Maritime India Vision 2030: A Commitment to Women

Shri Shyam Jaganathan, Director General of Shipping, spoke about the broader vision behind these initiatives. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Maritime India Vision 2030 aims to uplift women seafarers and steer India toward maritime excellence. The “Sagar Mein Samman” initiative is a direct response to this vision, focusing on enhancing respect and recognition for women in the maritime community.

By tracking health outcomes, “Sagar Mein Yog” aims to refine its offerings to meet the evolving needs of seafarers. The initiative is expected to reduce medical emergencies, lower healthcare costs, and decrease turnover rates. This commitment to holistic well-being reflects India’s dedication to creating a supportive maritime environment for all seafarers.

A Collective Commitment to Seafarer Health

The launch event brought together various stakeholders and seafarers, reaffirming India’s commitment to setting a global benchmark for seafarer health. The initiatives represent a significant step toward creating a more inclusive and supportive maritime industry. As India continues to navigate its maritime legacy, the focus on empowering women and promoting wellness will drive growth and excellence in the sector.

From the vast Indian Ocean to the shores of progress, these initiatives symbolize a new era for women in the maritime industry. With programs like “Sagar Mein Yog” and “Sagar Mein Samman,” India is not only recognizing the contributions of women but also paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous maritime future.
