Shri Hariman Sharma’s journey is nothing short of inspirational. Orphaned at a young age, he grew up in the small hamlet of Paniala in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. Despite facing numerous challenges, he pursued his education and developed a passion for farming and pomology. His story resonates with many, particularly students and aspiring farmers, as it exemplifies resilience and determination.
In 1998, Sharma embarked on a journey that would change his life and the lives of countless others. He planted seeds from discarded apples in his backyard, and to his surprise, one of those seeds sprouted the following year. By 2001, the plant bore fruit, showcasing its potential in the warm climate of Paniala, located at an elevation of 1,800 feet. This initial success motivated him to cultivate the mother plant and propagate it through grafting, leading to the establishment of a flourishing apple orchard. Over the next decade, he experimented with various grafting techniques and scions, refining his innovative apple variety. However, his groundbreaking work initially went unnoticed by the farming and scientific communities.
The Birth of HRMN-99: A Revolutionary Apple Variety
The HRMN-99 apple variety represents a significant breakthrough in agricultural science. Unlike traditional apple varieties that require temperate climates and extended chilling hours, HRMN-99 thrives in tropical and sub-tropical regions, even with summer temperatures soaring to 40-45°C. This adaptability has opened new avenues for apple farming in areas where it was previously considered unviable.
The journey of HRMN-99 began in earnest when the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) – India recognized Sharma’s innovation in 2012. The NIF verified the distinctiveness of the variety and facilitated its validation through molecular studies, fruit quality testing, and multi-location trials. Collaborating with various agricultural institutions, state departments, and farmers, the HRMN-99 variety expanded its reach to 29 states and Union Territories across India. This included regions like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra, where apple farming was once thought impossible. The NIF also played a crucial role in registering the variety with the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority, ensuring its protection and promotion.
Recognition and Impact on Farmers
Shri Hariman Sharma’s contributions to agriculture have not gone unnoticed. In 2017, he received the National Award during the 9th National Biennial Grassroots Innovation and Outstanding Traditional Knowledge Awards, presented by then-President Pranab Mukherjee. His accolades continued to grow, including the National Innovative Farmer Award and the National Best Farmer Award, among others. His recognition culminated in his representation of India at the 4th ASEAN India Grassroots Innovation Forum in Malaysia in November 2023.
The HRMN-99 variety, characterized by its striking striped red-over-yellow skin and juicy pulp, has empowered thousands of farmers across India. Each plant can produce up to 75 kg of fruit annually, providing a substantial source of income. The NIF has supported the commercial adoption of HRMN-99, establishing apple orchards and offering training to farmers, particularly in the North Eastern states. Over one lakh saplings of this variety have been planted, creating new income opportunities for farmers in these regions.
Shri Hariman Sharma’s innovative spirit has not only transformed apple cultivation in India but has also made nutritious apples accessible to the common man. His recognition through the Padma Shri Award serves as a testament to the power of grassroots innovations in addressing national challenges and fostering sustainable livelihoods.
