Celebrating Democracy: National Voters’ Day 2025
The 15th National Voters’ Day (NVD) is set to take place on January 25, 2025. This year’s celebration follows the successful conduct of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, marking a significant milestone in India’s democratic journey. The Election Commission of India (ECI) will also commemorate 75 years of dedicated service to the nation. With the total electorate nearing the 100 crore mark, this year’s event promises to be grander than ever.
Honoring the Voter Base
The upcoming National Voters’ Day will celebrate the remarkable growth of India’s electorate, which now stands at approximately 99.1 crore. This figure reflects a youthful and gender-balanced demographic, with 21.7 crore young electors aged 18-29. The Electoral Gender Ratio has also seen a positive shift, increasing from 948 in 2024 to 954 in 2025. This year’s theme, “Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure,” emphasizes the importance of voter participation and encourages citizens to take pride in exercising their democratic rights.
The event will be graced by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, who will serve as the Chief Guest. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, will attend as the Guest of Honour. The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners will also lead the event. This gathering will not only celebrate voters but also highlight the importance of active participation in the electoral process.
Recognizing Excellence in Election Management
During the National Voters’ Day ceremony, the Hon’ble President will present the Best Electoral Practices Awards. These awards will honor state and district officials who have demonstrated exemplary performance in ensuring smooth elections. Special recognition will be given to innovative outreach campaigns, the use of technology in election management, and initiatives that have made elections more accessible to all citizens.
The awards aim to inspire further improvements in electoral processes across the country. By recognizing outstanding efforts, the ECI hopes to encourage more states and districts to adopt best practices. This recognition not only celebrates achievements but also serves as a motivation for future elections, ensuring that every voter’s experience is seamless and efficient.
Showcasing India’s Democratic Journey
A highlight of this year’s National Voters’ Day will be the presentation of the ECI Coffee Table Book titled “India Votes 2024: A Saga of Democracy.” This publication will be presented to the Hon’ble President by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar. The book serves as a tribute to every voter, election official, and security personnel who contributed to the success of the 18th Lok Sabha elections. It will provide readers with a glimpse into India’s democratic journey through vivid visuals and compelling narratives.
Additionally, a short clip from the upcoming docu-drama series “India Decides,” produced by Warner Bros Discovery, will be released during the event. This three-part series explores the history and significance of the largest elections in the world. It will be available on the Discovery Channel and its OTT platforms. The event will also feature the ECI publication “Belief in the Ballot: Human Stories Shaping India’s 2024 Elections,” showcasing human interest stories that highlight the unique aspects of this election cycle.
A Nationwide Celebration of Democracy
National Voters’ Day has been celebrated annually since 2011, commemorating the foundation of the Election Commission of India on January 25, 1950. This date is significant as it falls just before India became a Republic. The event aims to underline the importance of the voter and raise awareness about electoral participation among citizens. It also encourages the enrollment of new voters, particularly young individuals who have recently become eligible.
Celebrations will take place at various levels, including national, state, district, constituency, and polling booth levels. This widespread observance makes National Voters’ Day one of the most significant celebrations in the country. New voters will be honored and presented with their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) during these ceremonies. The event serves as a reminder of the central role that voters play in shaping the nation’s democratic future.
