WHO Hosts Landmark Health Meeting in Cairo

On January 15, 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean will host a significant meeting of the Regional Health Alliance (RHA) at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria hotel in Cairo, Egypt. This high-level gathering will bring together over 80 participants from 18 United Nations organizations. Under the leadership of Regional Director Dr. Hanan Balkhy, this meeting marks a pivotal moment in WHO’s ongoing efforts to create a unified health agenda for the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The meeting will feature prominent figures in global health, including Dr. Adham Abdel Moneim, the Director of Programme Management, and Dr. Ahmed Zouiten, the acting Regional Emergency Director. Other notable attendees will include Dr. Bruce Aylward, Assistant Director-General for Universal Health Coverage, and Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products. The diverse representation from various UN agencies underscores the collaborative spirit of this initiative.

Objectives of the Meeting

The primary goal of the RHA meeting is to enhance collaboration on critical public health issues across UN development and humanitarian organizations. Participants will discuss joint actions to address gaps in the implementation of health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting aims to promote initiatives that tackle transboundary health issues, ensuring a cohesive approach to regional health challenges.

Another key objective is to facilitate coherent regional policy dialogues and advocacy strategies. By aligning regional and global health agendas, the meeting seeks to create a unified front in addressing pressing health concerns. Additionally, the gathering will support the integration of health into the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCFs), ensuring that health remains a priority in development planning.

The agenda will also include discussions on the newly endorsed WHO Regional Strategic Operational Plan for 2025โ€“2028. This plan aligns with the 14th General Programme of Work (GPW 14) and aims to address critical health priorities in the region. Participants will explore opportunities to align their efforts with this strategic framework, fostering a collaborative approach to health challenges.

A Milestone for Regional Health Cooperation

This meeting represents a crucial milestone in uniting regional health initiatives under a shared “One UN” approach. By fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, the RHA meeting aims to develop actionable strategies that ensure equitable access to healthcare. The focus will be on strengthening health system resilience and tackling the most pressing public health challenges faced by the Eastern Mediterranean region.

In light of evolving health challenges, this gathering provides a vital platform for aligning efforts, resources, and strategies. Participants will have the opportunity to share insights and best practices, paving the way for a healthier future. The meeting’s outcomes will be instrumental in shaping a coordinated response to health issues, ultimately benefiting millions of people in the region.

Flagship Initiatives and Future Directions

During the meeting, the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean will present its three flagship initiatives. These initiatives focus on expanding equitable access to medical products, investing in a resilient health workforce, and accelerating public health action on substance use. Each initiative addresses critical regional health priorities and aims to create a more robust healthcare system.

The endorsement of the RHA Joint Action Plan for 2025 will also be a significant outcome of the meeting. This plan will pave the way for coordinated efforts to deliver health services as “One UN.” By working together, UN agencies can leverage their strengths and resources to tackle health challenges more effectively.
