NHRC Launches Winter Internship for Students
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has initiated its Winter Internship program for 2024. This program spans four weeks and is designed for postgraduate students from various academic disciplines. Out of over 1,000 applicants, 80 students were selected to participate. This prestigious internship aims to enhance the interns’ understanding of human rights and their role in promoting these essential values in society.
A Call to Action from NHRC Leadership
During the inauguration of the internship, NHRC Acting Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani addressed the interns, urging them to reflect on their potential impact on human rights in India. She emphasized the importance of building a society where everyone has equal access to rights and opportunities. Sayani highlighted that Indiaโs journey towards becoming a global leader is not solely about economic growth. It also involves upholding the principles of justice, inclusivity, and compassion.
Her message resonated with the interns, encouraging them to think critically about their roles in shaping a more equitable society. Sayani’s call to action serves as a reminder that the fight for human rights is ongoing and requires active participation from the younger generation. By fostering a sense of responsibility, she hopes to inspire the interns to contribute positively to the future of human rights in India.
Insights from NHRC Officials
Shri Bharat Lal, the Secretary General of NHRC, congratulated the interns on their selection. He encouraged them to make the most of this opportunity. Lal stressed the importance of developing sensitivity towards societal issues and responding with compassion. He urged the interns to internalize the core values of equality, justice, liberty, and fraternity as outlined in the Constitution of India.
His address aimed to instill a sense of duty in the interns. He reminded them that upholding human rights is not just a professional obligation but a moral one. By engaging with these values, the interns can become advocates for change in their communities. The NHRC’s commitment to nurturing future leaders in human rights is evident in its approach to this internship program.
Comprehensive Learning Experience
Shri Devendra K. Nim, Joint Secretary of NHRC, provided an overview of the internship program. He highlighted the Commissionโs various activities aimed at promoting and protecting human rights. The internship includes interactive sessions, group research projects, and book reviews. These activities are designed to give interns a comprehensive understanding of human rights issues and the challenges associated with them.
Moreover, the interns will have the opportunity to participate in field visits. These visits will allow them to observe the functioning of various institutions and understand the ground realities of human rights protection. This hands-on experience is crucial for developing a deeper commitment to the cause. By the end of the internship, participants will not only gain theoretical knowledge but also practical insights into the complexities of human rights work.
Support and Recognition for Interns
The NHRC recognizes the hard work and dedication of its interns. Upon successful completion of the program, each intern will receive a stipend of Rs. 12,000. This financial support acknowledges their commitment and encourages them to continue their journey in the field of human rights.
The Director of the NHRC, Lt. Col. Virender Singh, concluded the inauguration with a vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude to the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment. The NHRC’s Winter Internship program is more than just an educational opportunity; it is a stepping stone for aspiring human rights advocates.
