SMF2024 Conference: Shaping the Future of Sheet Metal Technologies

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Ropar recently hosted the SMF2024 Conference on Sheet Metal Forming. This significant event took place on December 5-6, 2024, and focused on the theme “Shaping the Future with Advanced Sheet Metal Technologies.” The conference brought together experts, researchers, and industry professionals to discuss advancements in sheet metal forming and its applications in various sectors.

Inauguration and Keynote Addresses

The conference commenced with an inauguration ceremony featuring distinguished guests. Dr. Santosh Kumar, the Corporate Head and Vice President of R&D at Jindal Stainless Ltd., served as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Prof. K Narasimhan from IIT Bombay, who is also the Secretary of the Sheet Metal Forming Research Association (SMFRA). Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, the Director of IIT Ropar, expressed his best wishes to all participants and emphasized the importance of the conference for the future of mechanical engineering.

The organizing committee, led by Prof. Anupam Agrawal, welcomed over 100 delegates from academia and industry. Participants came from various parts of the country, showcasing their expertise in sheet metal forming and related fields. The event provided a platform for networking and collaboration among professionals dedicated to advancing this specialized area of engineering.

Highlights of SMF2024

Prof. K Narasimhan delivered an insightful presentation on the history and activities of the SMFRA. Dr. Santosh Kumar also presented during the conference, focusing on material usage in metallurgical engineering. With extensive experience in steel characterization and alloy design, he discussed the development of steel products for diverse sectors, including automotive, construction, defense, and shipbuilding. His contributions have significantly influenced the industry, making his insights invaluable to the attendees.

The conference concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Prof. Navin Kumar, a co-organizing secretary from the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT Ropar.
