National Awards for Empowering Persons with Disabilities 2024
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) is set to host the National Awards for Empowering Persons with Disabilities in New Delhi. This prestigious event coincides with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024. President Droupadi Murmu will be the Chief Guest, presenting awards to 33 individuals, institutions, and organizations that have made significant contributions to the empowerment of persons with disabilities. This annual event not only recognizes excellence but also promotes the values of inclusion and equality.
Celebrating Excellence in Disability Empowerment
Every year, on December 3rd, the DEPwD honors those who have shown exceptional commitment to the disability sector. The National Awards celebrate the stories of struggle and success of persons with disabilities. They highlight the importance of empowerment, inclusion, and equality as essential components of societal progress. This year, the awards will be presented in two main categories: Individual Excellence and Institutional Excellence.
In the Individual Excellence category, awards will be given for various achievements, including the Best Person with Disabilities and Outstanding Persons with Disabilities. There are also awards for the Best Child with Disabilities, Best Individual Working for Disability Empowerment, and Best Rehabilitation Professional. Each of these awards recognizes the hard work and dedication of individuals who have made a difference in the lives of persons with disabilities.
Institutional Excellence and Recognition
The Institutional Excellence category will honor organizations that have significantly contributed to disability empowerment. This includes awards for the Best Institution Working for Disability Empowerment, Best Employer for Persons with Disabilities, and Best Placement Agency for Persons with Disabilities. Additionally, awards will be given to the Best State/UT/District for implementing the Accessible India Campaign and for providing accessible transport and ICT solutions.
The DEPwD received an impressive 1,886 applications for the National Awards 2024, with 1,704 in individual categories and 182 in institutional categories. This high level of participation reflects the growing commitment to disability empowerment across the country. The awards serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to create an inclusive society where everyone has equal opportunities.
New Initiatives for Empowerment
On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, will unveil 16 transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities. These initiatives focus on inclusivity, innovation, and technology, reinforcing the government’s commitment to empowerment.
Some key initiatives include the launch of the ‘Kadam Knee Joint’ in collaboration with IIT Madras, the introduction of high-power spectacles developed by CSIO-CSIR, and the release of an e-Coffee Table Book titled ‘Divyasha’ by ALIMCO. Other initiatives include the opening of applications for the Accessible Built Environment Auditors Panel and the launch of the ‘Braille Book Portal.’ These initiatives aim to improve access to education, technology, and employment for persons with disabilities.
The celebration will bring together representatives from government and non-governmental organizations, experts, and various stakeholders. It aims to inspire societal change and reaffirm the vision of an inclusive society where everyone can thrive.
