The Witcher 4: New Game Enters Production
CD Projekt Red, the renowned Polish game developer, has made a significant announcement regarding the future of its beloved franchise, The Witcher. On Tuesday, the studio revealed that the fourth installment, codenamed Project Polaris, has officially entered full-scale production. This marks a crucial milestone for the company as it aims to launch the first game in a new trilogy. Alongside this exciting news, CD Projekt Red also shared impressive sales figures for its previous title, Cyberpunk 2077, which continues to thrive in the gaming market.
The Witcher 4 Enters Production
In a statement during the company’s third-quarter financial results for 2024, Michaล Nowakowski, Joint CEO of CD Projekt, expressed pride in the progress made by the Polaris team. “I’m proud to confirm that several weeks ago the Polaris team wrapped up preproduction and moved on to full-scale production โ the most intensive phase of development,” he stated. This transition signifies a shift from planning and conceptualization to the actual creation of the game.
Nowakowski took to social media platform X to congratulate the team for reaching this important milestone. He emphasized the significance of entering the production stage, stating, “This is an important step on our path to deliver the game and our long-term strategic goals.” The Witcher game director, Sebastian Kalemba, echoed this sentiment, expressing optimism about the potential of the new trilogy to provide players with a remarkable experience. With the development team now fully engaged in production, fans can anticipate exciting updates in the coming months.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sells 30 Million Copies
In addition to the news about The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red reported impressive sales figures for its previous title, Cyberpunk 2077. The game has surpassed 30 million copies sold since its launch in 2020. The studio also highlighted the success of the Phantom Liberty expansion, which features actor Idris Elba in a prominent role and has sold over eight million copies.
Nowakowski expressed his satisfaction with these figures, noting, “These are impressive figures. I’m very happy to see a large, dedicated community coalesce around our Cyberpunk games.” The studio’s strong performance in sales has contributed to a revenue of PLN 228 million (approximately $55.5 million) in Q3 2024. Looking ahead, CD Projekt Red plans to expand its reach by releasing Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion to Mac users with Apple Silicon chips in the coming year.
The Witcher 4 Details
Project Polaris was first announced in March 2022, with CD Projekt confirming that the game would be developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. The studio has positioned this project as the beginning of a new saga within The Witcher universe, aiming to deliver all three games in the trilogy within a six-year timeframe following the launch of The Witcher 4.
While specific details about The Witcher 4 remain limited, it has been confirmed that the game will be a story-driven open-world RPG, building on the legacy of its predecessor, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Although the studio has not provided a release date, it is anticipated that the game is still several years away from launch. In a recent interview, Doug Cockle, the voice actor for Geralt of Rivia, mentioned that Geralt would appear in The Witcher 4, but not as the central character. “What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game; we just don’t know how much,” Cockle stated, indicating a shift in focus for the narrative.
As CD Projekt Red moves forward with Project Polaris, fans of The Witcher series can look forward to a new chapter in the franchise, filled with fresh adventures and compelling storytelling.
