IMF Forecasts 7% GDP Growth for India in FY26 and FY27, Highlighting Rapid Economic Progress

India’s economy is projected to grow by 7% in both 2026 and 2027, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This growth rate positions India among the fastest-growing major economies, despite increasing uncertainties. The IMF attributes this positive outlook to strong domestic demand, robust services activity, and favorable demographic trends.

India’s growth prospects are bolstered by a large and expanding domestic market and ongoing structural reforms. However, higher oil prices present a challenge. The IMF noted, “India stands out with upward revisions, reflecting sustained momentum and growing evidence of stronger growth potential supported by favorable demographic dynamics.” The forecast follows a notable 7.8% growth in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the April-June quarter of the current financial year.

India holds its ground despite higher oil prices

The IMF expects India to maintain its status as one of the fastest-growing major economies, with domestic demand and services activity sustaining this momentum. The agency stated, “India remains among the fastest-growing major economies, with growth in 2026 projected at 7.0 percent.” This growth is attributed to resilient domestic demand and robust services, even in the face of rising oil prices.

The improved outlook comes after several global institutions, including the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), raised their growth estimates for India following the strong GDP growth recorded in the April-June quarter. The IMF emphasized that India’s growth remained robust, underpinned by domestic demand and services.

World Bank, OECD raise India growth forecasts

The World Bank has revised its growth projection for India in 2026-27 to 7.1%, up from a previous estimate of 6.6%. This adjustment is attributed to strong domestic demand and exports, despite global challenges. The World Bank anticipates the economy will grow by 7.2% in 2027-28.

Similarly, the OECD has increased its forecast for India’s GDP growth in 2026-27 to 7.1%, up from 6.3% projected in June. This revised estimate surpasses the 7% forecasts from S&P, Moody’s, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), while Fitch expects growth of 6.9%. Moody’s Ratings has also raised its forecast for India’s real GDP growth in FY27 to 7%, citing the economy’s resilience amid geopolitical tensions.

Global growth faces a more fragile outlook

Despite the positive revisions for India, the IMF has cautioned that the global economy’s resilience is becoming increasingly fragile and uneven. The IMF projects global growth at 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, with inflation expected to reach 4.7%, largely driven by higher energy and food prices.

This global outlook presents risks for India, including the potential for higher crude oil and energy prices to fuel inflation and pressure household purchasing power. Additionally, below-normal monsoon rainfall could impact agricultural output and rural demand, while prolonged geopolitical tensions may disrupt supply chains and increase input costs. These factors remain key risks flagged by agencies assessing India’s economic outlook.
