Rajat freezes for a moment, the change in her voice sparking a hesitation. He doesn’t want to seem uncaring, yet the thought of getting up for such a small task seems bothersome. Still, after a few seconds of contemplation, he sighs, muttering to himself about how he’s been roped into doing things like this. Reluctantly, he gets up and heads toward the kitchen. He reaches the shelf, stands on his toes, and retrieves the heavy box of dal, then walks over to hand it to Savi. She thanks him, though there’s a subtle tension between them, a lingering sense of duty rather than affection. Once the task is done, Rajat moves quickly to leave the room, eager to get back to the match he was watching.
The servant, observing the interaction from the corner of the room, murmurs to Savi, “Rajat has changed so much. He wouldn’t have done something like this before.” Savi silently nods, lost in thought. In her mind, she reflects that while Rajat’s actions seem kind, they are still hard to trust. “I’ll finish some work first, and then I’ll change into a Marathi-style outfit,” he adds, his tone almost teasing.
