Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Embarks on Official Visit to Mexico and USA

Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman will begin her official visit to Mexico and the USA on October 16, 2024. This visit aims to strengthen economic ties, promote trade relations, and enhance cooperation between India, Mexico, and the USA.

Key Meetings and Events in Mexico

During her first visit to Mexico from October 17 to 20, 2024, Finance Minister Sitharaman will lead a delegation of Indian officials from the Ministry of Finance. The visit highlights the growing economic partnership between India and Mexico.

In Guadalajara, the Finance Minister will chair a Tech Leaders Roundtable, where global technology leaders, including major Indian IT companies based in Guadalajara, will meet. Guadalajara is often called the “Silicon Valley” of Mexico, as it hosts a large number of international tech companies. Minister Sitharaman will also visit the headquarters of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a major player in Mexico’s IT industry.

In addition, the Finance Minister will have a bilateral meeting with her Mexican counterpart, Mr. Rogelio Ramirez de la O, Mexico’s Minister of Finance and Public Credit. They will discuss ways to strengthen economic ties and boost cooperation. The minister will also meet with Mexican lawmakers to explore opportunities for economic development and parliamentary cooperation.

In Mexico City, Smt. Sitharaman will deliver a keynote speech at the India-Mexico Trade and Investment Summit. This summit will gather key business leaders from both countries to discuss trade and investment opportunities. She will also meet with top business leaders and investors in Mexico to showcase India’s economic policies and encourage foreign investment.

The visit to Mexico will end with a community event hosted by the Indian diaspora, celebrating the close bond between India and Mexico.

Participation in High-Level Meetings in the USA

After concluding her visit to Mexico, Finance Minister Sitharaman will travel to the USA from October 20 to 26, 2024. She will take part in several important global meetings during her stay in New York and Washington, D.C.

The Finance Minister will participate in the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. These meetings are crucial for discussing global financial trends and strategies. She will also attend the 4th G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting and the G20 Joint Meeting with environment and foreign ministers. Additionally, she will participate in the G7 – Africa Ministerial Roundtable, focusing on global economic development and cooperation.

During her time in the USA, Smt. Sitharaman will attend a Pension Funds Roundtable at the New York Stock Exchange. She will also engage with students and faculty at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University to share insights on India’s economic policies and financial strategies.

The Finance Minister will take part in the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR) and attend discussions organized by the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Bilateral Meetings and Global Financial Discussions

Finance Minister Sitharaman will hold bilateral meetings with leaders from several countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Germany. She will also have one-on-one discussions with the heads of the World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and CEOs of major banking and financial institutions.

One of the high-profile events during her visit will be a World Bank Group discussion titled “From Idea to Implementation: New Financial Solutions to Accelerate Development.” In this session, she will contribute to discussions on innovative financial strategies that can boost global development efforts.

In another important panel discussion, Finance Minister Sitharaman will speak on the topic of Bretton Woods Institutions (BWI) alongside Mr. Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary; Mr. Carlos Cuerpo, Spain’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Business; and Ms. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development. This event is organized by the Centre for Global Development (CGD) and will focus on modern financial institutions and their role in global economic growth.
