The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics to Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel, and Andrea Ghez.

Dr. Penrose was awarded half the prize. He invented ingenious mathematical methods to explore Albert Einsteinโ€™s general theory of relativity. He showed that the theory leads to the formation of black holes.

The second half was split between Dr. Genzel and Dr. Ghez โ€œfor the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy.โ€ the committee said.

The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and prize money of 10 million Swedish kronor (more than USD 1.1 million), courtesy of a bequest left 124 years ago by the prizeโ€™s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. The amount was increased recently to adjust for inflation.
