Government of Haryana established a Center of Excellence for Sarasvati River Research

As reported by the Government of Haryana, in the year 2017, the Government of Haryana established a Center of Excellence for Sarasvati River Research (CERSR) at Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. The mission of CERSR is to scientifically characterize paleochannels and validate the antiquity of culture and civilization nurtured by the sacred Saraswati River system of the Indian subcontinent. Initially an amount of Rs. 20 lakhs was fined to the CERSR. Currently, an annual grant of Rs. 50 lakh is provided to the ERCSR.

Also, in 2015, the government of Haryana formed the Sarasvati Heritage Development Board. The Council has a mission to revive the Sarasvati River with the mission “Sarasvati flows” and to revive its heritages along the course of the Sarasvati River, raise awareness of the richness and importance of Sarasvati heritage, develop tourism, cultural corridor, build/develop water bodies and support research papers, compile research papers, publish journals, monographs and reports etc. Related to the Sarasvati River and its heritages on the Paleochannel.

The Sarasvati Heritage Development Board undertakes the following specific activities to raise public awareness:

  • The Council celebrates Sarasvati Mahotsav every year on the eve of Basant Panchami;
  • The Council organizes international conferences and seminars every year in collaboration with renowned universities and colleges; AND
  • A chapter on the Indus Sarasvati civilization has been incorporated into the X-class curriculum.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Sri Bishweshwar Tudu in a written response to Rajya Sabha today.
