New Protocol Launched to Boost Pig Farming in Northeast India

In a significant move to enhance pig farming in the North-Eastern Region, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, unveiled the publication titled “Minimum Standard Protocol for Semen Production and Standard Operating Procedures for Artificial Insemination using Liquid Semen in Pigs” on November 2, 2026, during his visit to Sikkim. This initiative targets the promotion of scientific breeding practices, genetic enhancement, and improved livelihoods for pig farmers in this vital agricultural sector.

Comprehensive Framework for Pig Breeding

The newly launched protocol offers a detailed framework for producing high-quality pig semen, ensuring biosecurity, and implementing effective artificial insemination methods. It sets out standardized procedures for establishing and running pig semen production labs, as well as for providing artificial insemination services across India. This document serves as a practical guide for state officials, veterinarians, breeding centers, and farmers, paving the way for broader adoption of modern breeding techniques.

Northeastern Region Leading in Pig Farming

According to the 20th Livestock Census conducted in 2019, India boasts a pig population of 9.06 million, which makes up 1.7% of the country’s total livestock. Notably, the North-Eastern Region is the heart of pig farming in India, housing nearly 45% of the nation’s pig population. With indigenous and non-descript pigs representing about 79% of this population, there exists considerable potential for genetic improvement through scientific breeding approaches. By improving access to quality germplasm and advanced breeding techniques, the initiative aims to boost productivity and support the livelihoods of smallholder pig farmers in the region.

Goals and Benefits of the Initiative

The protocol is designed to improve reproductive efficiency and accelerate genetic enhancements within the pig farming sector. It emphasizes sustainable practices such as:

  • Selection of superior breeding boars
  • Procedures for semen collection, evaluation, processing, storage, and transportation
  • Laboratory quality management systems
  • Biosecurity and disease prevention measures

With its implementation, the protocol is expected to enhance the availability of quality breeding material and increase the overall productivity and profitability of pig farming enterprises. By bolstering pork production, the initiative aims to generate substantial economic opportunities and contribute to the sustainable growth of the pig sector across the North-Eastern states.
