Government Empowers Tribal Artisans with New MoU
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has taken a significant step to enhance market access for tribal artisans by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED). This collaboration aims to benefit artisans registered under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, which was launched to elevate the quality and reach of traditional craftsmanship.
In a formal ceremony attended by key figures such as Dr. Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner at the Ministry of MSME, and Shri M. Raja Murugan, Managing Director of TRIFED, the agreement was finalized. Other notable attendees included Shri Nitish Kumar, Deputy Director General, and Shri Danish Ashraf, Joint Development Commissioner of the Ministry of MSME. This partnership seeks to leverage the PM Vishwakarma framework alongside TRIFED’s established marketplace and retail network.
Objectives of the MoU
The MoU outlines several objectives aimed at supporting eligible tribal artisans. Firstly, the Ministry of MSME and TRIFED will work together to promote and sell products crafted by these artisans, which include a diverse range of trades such as carpentry, metalworking, pottery, and more. This initiative ensures that artisans who have honed their skills through the traditional guru-shishya model receive the recognition and market presence they deserve.
As part of the collaboration, TRIFED will assist in onboarding artisans, providing them with necessary capacity-building resources and access to its retail network. Eligible products will be featured under the “Tribes India–PM Vishwakarma Collection,” making them visible on the Tribes India platform, contingent on the artisans’ consent and adherence to TRIFED policies.
Moreover, TRIFED will offer essential support in areas such as product aggregation, quality assurance, and packaging. They will also help with initial product imagery and cataloging to present the artisan’s work effectively. The Ministry of MSME is committed to identifying potential sellers and enhancing their skills by conducting awareness workshops and fostering coordination.
The collaboration not only amplifies the visibility of tribal artisans but also facilitates better market access. With TRIFED’s diverse product range—spanning textiles, metal crafts, jewelry, and organic foods—artisans will have a greater platform to showcase their talents. Retail outlets will prominently display these unique crafts, connecting consumers with authentic tribal artistry.
Through this initiative, the government aims to integrate traditional artisans into the modern marketplace, thus ensuring their crafts gain the recognition and consumer base they deserve. This partnership signifies a progressive move towards enhancing the livelihoods of tribal artisans while preserving rich cultural traditions.
