Historic Agreement to Resolve Narmada Project Disputes Finalized

The 15th meeting of the Review Committee for the Narmada Control Authority (RCNCA) convened on October 27, 2026, via video conferencing. The session was chaired by Shri C. R. Paatil, Union Minister of Jal Shakti, and included participation from the Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
During the meeting, the RCNCA endorsed the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) established on July 7, 2026, in New Delhi. This agreement was signed by representatives from four states in the presence of Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah and Minister Paatil and acts as a one-time settlement for all outstanding inter-State dues, claims, and financial obligations.
This move is seen as a pivotal step towards resolving long-standing disputes over cost-sharing related to the Sardar Sarovar Project among Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. The approval of the MoA signals an end to years of financial contention and set terms for repaying these outstanding dues within the current financial year of 2026-27.
Union Minister C. R. Paatil expressed gratitude to the Chief Ministers for their collaborative spirit in agreeing to the Attorney General’s recommendations and finalizing the MoA details. He noted that with the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the government is committed to addressing inter-State river water challenges. Paatil also acknowledged the dedicated work of officials from the respective states, the Department of Water Resources, and the Narmada Control Authority that facilitated the meeting and helped ratify the agreement.
The adoption of this agreement marks a significant achievement in promoting cooperative governance and resource management among the states involved, indicating a brighter future for collaboration over shared water resources.
