Ayushman Vay Vandana Marks Two Years of Transformative Healthcare

Today marks a significant milestone as Ayushman Vay Vandana celebrates two years of enhancing healthcare accessibility for senior citizens across India. Launched by the Prime Minister on October 29, 2024, this initiative expands the coverage of the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to every citizen aged 70 and above, regardless of their economic background.

Strengthening Health Coverage for Seniors

Implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ayushman Vay Vandana signifies a crucial effort to provide health coverage to around 6 crore elderly individuals, representing approximately 4.5 crore families in the country. Senior citizens aged 70 years and older are entitled to a health coverage benefit of up to ₹5 lakh per year for secondary and tertiary hospital care.

Moreover, those already covered under AB PM-JAY can receive an additional top-up of up to ₹5 lakh per year exclusively for themselves. This unique provision not only secures additional health coverage for eligible seniors but also preserves existing coverage for younger family members, enhancing the financial protection available for elderly citizens.

Utilization and Impact of the Scheme

As of October 20, 2026, Ayushman Vay Vandana has reported an impressive 23.46 lakh authorized hospital admissions. The total monetary authorization for these services has reached ₹5,668.80 crore, indicating the scheme’s vital role in facilitating healthcare access for seniors. Among the most common procedures, cataract surgery ranks highest, with 4.71 lakh treatments making up about 20.1% of all cases, highlighting the initiative’s efforts to improve eye health for the elderly.

Also notable is the provision of chronic haemodialysis, with approximately 2.90 lakh treatments, which aids those needing regular care for kidney diseases. In terms of authorized expenditures, procedures such as Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) accounted for around ₹649 crore, showcasing the program’s financial support for crucial cardiac treatments. Other significant treatments include knee replacements, COPD management, and acute kidney care, demonstrating a well-rounded coverage approach.

Commitment to Inclusive Healthcare

Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the National Health Authority, expressed that Ayushman Vay Vandana embodies the government’s commitment to dignified healthcare access for seniors. By including all eligible citizens aged 70 and above in the AB PM-JAY scheme, the initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens related to hospitalization, ensuring that healthcare remains a fundamental right for every elderly person, irrespective of their socio-economic status.

As the Ayushman Vay Vandana initiative enters its third year, its focus remains on broadening the scope of publicly funded health coverage and continuing to minimize the financial challenges faced by senior citizens and their families.
