Dalal Street Prepares for a Week of Market Volatility

Rising geopolitical tensions, high crude oil prices, and a weakening rupee are creating a challenging environment for investors on Dalal Street. These factors, combined with ongoing foreign fund selling, are contributing to market volatility. Investors are preparing for another turbulent week, especially with discussions of potential military actions in Iran by the US-Israel alliance ahead of critical elections in both countries.

Jio Platforms IPO and Market Reactions

One of the key events this week is the anticipated listing of Jio Platforms, which recently closed the largest IPO in Indian history at ₹30,213 crore. The stock is expected to debut on October 28. Amid escalating concerns about conflict in the Persian Gulf, Brent crude prices surged above $114 per barrel, settling around $112, levels not seen since May. This spike in oil prices has further pressured the rupee, which approached the ₹95-to-a-dollar mark by the end of the week.

Despite the overall negative sentiment, there was a slight uptick in foreign fund activity. VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that foreign funds reduced their selling and even became net buyers on two occasions during the week. He attributed this shift to a decline in US bond yields and improved rupee valuation, which fell to ₹94.94 against the dollar. However, October has seen net selling by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) reach ₹53,337 crore, contributing to a record yearly total of ₹3.7 lakh crore in net selling, excluding IPO proceeds.

Market Dynamics and Margin Trade Concerns

The week also witnessed a significant decline in midcap and smallcap stocks, likely due to forced liquidations in margin-funded long positions. Concerns have been raised about the growing size of the margin trade funding (MTF) book, which has doubled over the past two years to approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore. This trend has been a point of caution among market analysts, who warn of the risks associated with high levels of margin trading.

In the unofficial market for yet-to-list stocks, speculators are anticipating a listing price of around ₹1,370 for Jio Platforms, indicating a potential 22% gain upon its debut.
