Indian Railways Delivers First 18-Coach LHB Train to Bangladesh, Featuring Enhanced Passenger Amenities
Indian Railways has successfully exported its first batch of LHB passenger coaches to Bangladesh. RITES Ltd announced on Tuesday that it dispatched 18 broad-gauge passenger coaches to Bangladesh Railway as part of a larger agreement to supply a total of 200 coaches. The coaches are being manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab.
The first batch, sent on October 12, 2026, includes 11 non-AC Shovan chair cars, three AC chair cars, two AC sleeper coaches, and two AC power cars. The power cars are equipped with a guard room and space for luggage, according to RITES. The company has previously supplied over 280 locomotives and more than 1,085 coaches and diesel multiple unit (DMU) trainsets globally.
Partnership with Bangladesh Railway
The collaboration between RCF and Bangladesh Railway began in the 2015-16 period, when RCF delivered 120 LHB broad-gauge passenger coaches to Bangladesh. Building on this relationship, Bangladesh Railway placed a new order in 2024 for 200 additional broad-gauge passenger coaches. This order includes seven different variants and aims to enhance the partnership between the two organizations.
The newly manufactured coaches have been customized to meet Bangladesh Railway’s operational needs while improving passenger comfort. They feature several design enhancements, including reclining seats with stainless steel armrests and footrests, allowing for adjustable seating positions. Additionally, the coaches are equipped with various passenger amenities such as fans in air-conditioned coaches, an integrated CCTV surveillance system, and a Baby Care Room.
Technological Features and Customizations
The coaches have been structurally reinforced to accommodate the additional weight of passengers during peak travel times. They also incorporate a crashworthy design that complies with European Standard EN 15227, enhancing safety during collisions. Furthermore, the electrical systems have been tailored for Bangladesh Railway, operating on a 415 V system instead of the conventional 750 V used by Indian Railways.
