HCLTech Surges Over 5%, TCS Rises 4%: Exploring the Rally in IT Stocks

Dalal Street opened on a positive note on Tuesday, driven by gains in technology stocks. The BSE Focused IT index and Nifty IT surged approximately 3%, with HCLTech leading the charge, rising 5.74% to Rs 1,290 following strong quarterly results. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) also saw a significant increase of 5.07%, reaching Rs 2,234.80 after reporting a 15% rise in net profit last week.

By 10:55 am, the Nifty IT index was up 3.12%, or 885.65 points, at 29,235.25, while the BSE Focused IT index gained 3.04%, or 1,044.37 points, to reach 35,366.87. The broader market reflected this upward trend, with the BSE Sensex climbing 466.15 points, or 0.65%, to 72,390.83, and Nifty 50 rising 145.30 points, or 0.65%, to 22,508.65.

Why are IT stocks rallying?

The rally in IT stocks is attributed to better-than-expected quarterly results from major companies, which have encouraged investors to return to previously beaten-down shares. Dharmesh Kant, head of equity research at Cholamandalam Securities, noted that the quarterly numbers from Accenture, TCS, and HCLTech suggest that concerns over earnings growth in the IT sector may be easing. This has created a value buying opportunity in the sector.

Despite the gains on Tuesday, IT stocks have struggled throughout the year, with the Nifty IT index down 23% year-to-date due to moderating earnings growth and fears that artificial intelligence could disrupt traditional software services. Additionally, the rupee’s recovery, strengthening to 95.25 against the dollar, has further supported market sentiment.

Inflation, crude prices remain top concerns

Investors are closely monitoring the interest rate outlook following a higher-than-expected retail inflation rate of 5.54% in September. This has brought the Reserve Bank of India’s rate decisions into focus. Crude oil prices also remain a significant concern, with Brent crude futures trading above $100 per barrel despite a decline of more than 1% during the day. High oil prices continue to stoke inflation worries, particularly in light of a weak monsoon.

While domestic IT stocks advanced, global technology shares faced pressure due to reports of rapid advancements by Chinese chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies. This development triggered a global sell-off in chipmakers, with South Korea’s technology-heavy KOSPI falling 6% and an index tracking Asian shares excluding Japan declining by more than 2%.
