Delhi Reviews Lumpy Skin Disease Control Measures for Cattle
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) of India has conducted a thorough review of the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) situation in Delhi, as part of ongoing efforts to protect cattle health. In collaboration with the Delhi Animal Husbandry authorities, the review addressed the current disease status, vaccination efforts, and necessary preventive measures.
On September 13, Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Naveena B. Maheswarappa led a meeting with Delhi officials to discuss critical steps for LSD management. She highlighted the importance of maintaining consistent vaccination programs, proactive surveillance, and the timely execution of disease-control strategies. Additionally, Dr. Maheswarappa urged for improved collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), local shelters, and other stakeholders. This coordination is essential for effective vaccination and management of stray cattle, as well as strengthening biosecurity measures.
Current Status of Lumpy Skin Disease
Currently, LSD cases in Delhi are sporadic and well under control, with low severity rates and satisfactory recovery among affected animals. No fatalities have been reported in the cattle population. As of September 13, there are approximately 584 active cases, primarily among unvaccinated and at-risk animals, which include those suffering from co-morbidities, nutritional deficiencies, or stress.
This year, over 45,950 animals in Delhi have received vaccinations against LSD. The ongoing vaccination drives and disease-control initiatives emphasize the need for timely immunizations, constant monitoring, isolation of sick animals, vector control, and biosecurity practices.
Strengthening Preventive Measures
During the recent review, DAHD offered technical guidance on vaccination, treatment, and overall animal management. The department encouraged Delhi authorities to strengthen coordination with the MCD, local shelters, and additional stakeholders to ensure effective management and vaccination of stray cattle. This includes isolating affected animals and implementing thorough vector control and biosecurity measures, such as establishing physical checkpoints at state borders to monitor cattle movement.
Additionally, awareness campaigns involving animal owners, local representatives, NGOs, schools, and other stakeholders were emphasized to promote vaccination and enhance animal husbandry practices.
The DAHD is committed to close collaboration with various States and Union Territories, continuously monitoring the situation and providing necessary support for the effective prevention and containment of LSD across the nation.
