Captive Mines Boost Coal Production for 2026

Captive mines continue to play a vital role in coal production in India, recording a notable increase in output. From FY 2024-25 to FY 2025-26, production from these mines rose from 167.44 million tonnes (MT) to 184 MT, marking a growth of 10.10%. When combined with output from commercial mines, which contributed approximately 26 MT, the overall production from both sectors reached 210 MT in FY 2025-26, compared to 190.95 MT the previous year. This duo accounts for around 21% of the country’s total coal production, which has exceeded one billion tonnes for the second consecutive year, totaling 1,039 MT in FY 2025-26.

Strong Start in FY 2026-27

The strong performance has persisted into the current fiscal year. By September 10, 2026, captive mines produced 68.98 MT, up from 65.78 MT during the same timeframe last year, reflecting a growth rate of about 5% or an additional 3.2 MT on a base that had already increased by 10.12% the previous year. This positive trend has been observed during the initial five months of the year, a typically challenging period due to monsoon conditions that complicate mining and transportation operations.

Improved Dispatch Rates

The dispatch rates from captive mines have also improved, reaching 75.68 MT, compared to 71.43 MT the previous year, which represents a 5.94% increase and an additional 4.25 MT. Preliminary data indicates that this upward momentum is likely to continue as the monsoon season begins to wane, with captive mines producing 4.12 MT and dispatching 4.21 MT during the ten-day period from September 1 to September 10, 2026.

New Capacity on the Horizon

In terms of future capacity, operators are steadily augmenting their capabilities. Nine new captive and commercial mines are set to commence operations in FY 2026-27, with a combined peak rated capacity of 20.67 MT. Of these new additions, three mines with a peak capacity of 7.51 MT have already begun production this fiscal year, with the remaining six expected to follow suit shortly.

Positive Outlook for the Coming Year

Given these developments, production from captive mines is projected to surpass 190 MT in FY 2026-27. Together with contributions from commercial mines, the total output from these two sectors is anticipated to exceed 228 MT in the current financial year, showcasing a robust trajectory for India’s coal production industry.
