Purple Dots Initiative Connects Disabled Individuals with Opportunities

A groundbreaking digital initiative is about to transform the landscape for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), providing unprecedented access to services and support. On September 10, 2026, in New Delhi, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), along with the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), and the EkStep Foundation, formalized their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement establishes a framework for the innovative **Purple Dots – UBI (Unified Benefits Interface) Initiative**.

The Purple Dots Initiative, conceptualized by DEPwD, aims to solve a fundamental issue in disability inclusion: not merely making benefits accessible but ensuring that individuals can easily find the right services when they need them. At its essence, a “Purple Dot” functions as a digital profile that allows PwDs to specify their needs—be it assistance with employment, access to assistive technology like wheelchairs, or professional training. Simultaneously, organizations such as employers, service providers, and NGOs can create their own “dots” to showcase the opportunities and resources they offer.

Creating a Connected Ecosystem

This innovative initiative strives to fund a connected ecosystem by utilizing an open and interoperable digital infrastructure. This will allow stakeholders to engage and address identified needs in real time, thereby revolutionizing the current system of disjointed access to services. The goal is to streamline the process of discovering, linking, and participating in the available opportunities.

Collaboration for Implementation

The newly signed MoU outlines a collaborative approach to advance the Purple Dots Initiative from concept to execution. It aims to empower Persons with Disabilities by providing them with easier access to government entitlements, services, job opportunities, training sessions, assistive devices, and overall support from various stakeholders—including government bodies, private sector entities, NGOs, and philanthropic organizations.

This initiative marks a pivotal advancement toward enhancing accessibility and inclusion through digital public infrastructure. Rather than developing isolated systems for individual programs, Purple Dots aims to create a unified, interoperable framework that fosters cooperation among diverse actors within the disability space. This approach seeks to amplify the visibility and accessibility of already-existing services and opportunities.

The Role of EkStep Foundation

Partnering with DEPwD and ALIMCO, the EkStep Foundation is integral to this initiative. Known for fostering large-scale societal transformation through digital public infrastructure, EkStep will leverage its expertise in building collaborative digital ecosystems to benefit the disability sector. This alliance aspires to enhance the connections among local ecosystem players and better serve Persons with Disabilities.

The MoU-signing event was attended by notable officials from DEPwD, including Additional Secretary Ms. Manmeet Kaur Nanda and Director Shri Ashish Thakre. From ALIMCO, representatives included Assistant Managers Shri Pankaj Dwivedi and Ms. Priya Grover. Shri Ikpreet Singh and Shri Gaurav Gupta represented the EkStep Foundation.

Ultimately, the Purple Dots Initiative envisions a future where the needs of individuals are not overlooked and available opportunities are easily found. This digital connectivity aims to serve as a practical bridge between Persons with Disabilities and the myriad of services, opportunities, and support systems available to them.
