Government Expands Scholarships to Empower Disadvantaged Students
The Government of India, through the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, is making significant strides in reforming its scholarship and educational support initiatives. These efforts are designed to enhance educational access for students from Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and Economically Backward Classes (EBCs), while ensuring that program implementation is timely, transparent, and accountable.
Over 1.44 crore SC students have reaped the benefits from the Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarship Schemes, with a total of Rs 12,773 crore allocated to foster their educational pursuits. This financial support aims to remove economic barriers that hinder students from exploring learning opportunities.
Inclusive Education for OBC and EBC Communities
In addition, more than 1.01 crore students from OBC and EBC backgrounds have also received aid through these scholarship programs, amounting to Rs 2,445.05 crore. This extensive outreach illustrates the government’s dedication to enhancing inclusive education and providing equal opportunities for students facing socio-economic challenges.
Reform in Entrance Examination Scheduling
The Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA) has also introduced a vital reform by moving the annual National Entrance Test for SHRESHTA (NETS) from May to December. This change aims to streamline counseling and admissions, aligning them with the academic calendar. The revised schedule is expected to minimize delays, helping to reduce student drop-outs and allowing eligible students to begin their studies without unnecessary interruptions.
Enhancing Document Verification
To uphold the integrity of the scholarship process, a new system for on-the-spot verification of income and caste certificates will be implemented as part of the National Overseas Scholarship Scheme starting from the academic year 2024–25. This initiative is intended to curtail fraud, ensuring that scholarships are awarded solely to qualified candidates aspiring to study abroad.
Improving Grievance Handling
Furthermore, a mandatory seven-day grievance submission window will be introduced under the National Fellowship for SC Students Scheme from the academic year 2025–26. This window will allow students to report any discrepancies following the UGC-NET and Joint CSIR-UGC NET results, thereby promoting transparency and timely resolution of grievances in the fellowship-selection process.
Through these expanded financial programs and systematic reforms, the Ministry is actively working to foster an inclusive and student-focused educational environment. These measures reaffirm the Government of India’s commitment to empower disadvantaged communities by ensuring equitable access to quality education and opportunities for academic progression.
