Brics Summit and Nationwide Bank Strike Tomorrow: Will Banks Be Open or Closed on September 11? Find Out Here
The 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit is set to commence in New Delhi, prompting heightened security measures, traffic restrictions, and government office closures over the weekend. This situation has raised questions regarding the operational status of banks on September 11, the day of the summit.
Not all banks will be closed on September 11. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar, banks in Rajasthan will shut down due to local elections in the Jaipur Municipal Corporation. However, banks in Delhi will remain open, as the RBI does not designate September 11 as a holiday in the national capital.
Bank operations may still be impacted by a nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on the same day. The UFBU, representing over 90% of the banking workforce, is protesting for a five-day banking week, a revised Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, and other unresolved issues. The unions have also announced a three-day strike from September 28 to 30, followed by an indefinite strike starting October 26 if their demands are not met.
Disruptions in Gujarat
In Gujarat, customers may face additional disruptions as the Maha Gujarat Bank Employees’ Association (MGBEA) has called for a strike from September 11 to 13. With September 12 being the second Saturday and September 13 a Sunday, public sector bank branches in the state could be closed for three consecutive days. The MGBEA anticipates participation from around 5,400 branches and 75,000 employees, potentially affecting transactions worth approximately Rs 15,000 crore.
Upcoming Bank Holidays in September
Several bank holidays are scheduled for September. Banks will be closed in Assam on September 12 for Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva. On September 14, many states will observe a holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi, with additional closures on September 15 in Gujarat, Odisha, and Goa for Samvatsari, Nuakhai, and Ganesh Chaturthi (second day), respectively.
State-specific bank holidays are also planned for September 21, 22, 23, and 25. Generally, banks are closed on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, regardless of state-specific holidays. Customers are advised to check their branch’s holiday schedule before visiting. ATMs, UPI, internet banking, and mobile banking will remain operational for routine transactions, although branch-dependent services may experience delays.
