Bihar’s Sanitation Pro Transforms Life with NAMASTE Scheme
Shri Dharmendra Kumar Ray, a 39-year-old sanitation professional from Bihar, has charted a remarkable journey from worker to self-employed entrepreneur, thanks to the support provided by the NAMASTE Scheme. His story exemplifies how skill, determination, and accessible financial assistance can pave the way for sustainable livelihoods and enhanced family welfare.
Despite having only completed the sixth grade, Ray honed his expertise in sewer and septic tank cleaning operations. He leveraged his practical knowledge gained while working for nearly four years as a Helper and Graver Machine Operator with Shiva and Shiva Company in Noida. This experience not only taught him the nuances of operating sanitation machinery but also instilled in him the ambition to be self-reliant.
Overcoming Barriers to Success
While Ray was determined to start his own business, he faced financial hurdles, specifically the cost of machinery and a vehicle essential for his enterprise. However, through the Swachhta Udyami Yojana component of the NAMASTE Scheme, he accessed crucial financial assistance. This support included an upfront capital subsidy that helped him acquire a Jetting Cum Graver Machine and a Mahindra Maxx City CBC 1.3 LX vehicle, with a total project cost of Rs. 14,77,500 divided equally between loan and subsidy.
Building a Better Future
With the equipment in hand, Ray launched his mechanised sanitation service, working under the Greater Noida Authority. His venture enabled him to deploy his skills effectively while providing a sustainable source of income. Following the establishment of his business, his monthly earnings surged to between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 30,000, dramatically improving his family’s lifestyle.
Ray’s newfound financial stability allowed him to bring his wife and two children from Bihar to Noida, fostering family unity. He enrolled his children in a reputable school, securing their access to better education and opportunities. This transformation has greatly enhanced the family’s economic security and contributed to a more stable and dignified living environment.
A Testament to Change
Shri Dharmendra Kumar Ray’s journey from an experienced sanitation worker to a self-reliant entrepreneur highlights the profound impact of the NAMASTE-SUY initiative. His success story is a testament to how determination, skills, and institutional support can come together to create sustainable livelihoods, empower families, and advance the field of mechanised sanitation services.
