Indian Railways Boosts Connectivity with Rs. 10,021 Crore Investment
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has greenlighted five significant railway projects today, amounting to an investment of approximately Rs. 10,021 crore. This ambitious initiative aims to enhance railway infrastructure across South India, promising improved mobility and operational efficiency for Indian Railways.
Details of the Projects
The projects include the construction of:
- Arakkonam – Renigunta 3rd and 4th Line, spanning 77 kilometers
- Whitefield – Bangarapet 3rd and 4th Line, covering 47 kilometers
- Hosur – Omalur Doubling, totaling 147 kilometers
- Salem – Karur – Dindigul Doubling, extending 159 kilometers
- Multitracking of Secunderabad (Ghatkesar) – Kazipet, measuring 110 kilometers
These enhancements will not only increase the capacity of the railway lines but also streamline operations, reducing congestion and ensuring more reliable services for passengers and freight.
A Vision for Comprehensive Development
These initiatives align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a New India, fostering regional development and boosting employment opportunities. Through comprehensive planning outlined in the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects will enable better multi-modal connectivity and logistic efficiency across the region.
Wider Impact Across Four States
The five projects will impact 17 districts in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, ultimately expanding the Indian Railways’ network by approximately 540 kilometers. This expansion is expected to enhance connectivity for around 2,121 villages, benefiting a population of approximately 5.2 million people.
Connecting with Tourism and Freight
Moreover, improved rail connectivity will open new avenues for tourism, better linking travelers to notable destinations such as Tirupati, Kodaikanal, and Mettur Dam. The projects are not just about passenger convenience; they are also crucial for transporting essential commodities such as coal, cement, and food grains. The capacity upgrades will facilitate an additional freight traffic volume of 47 million tonnes per annum.
Environmental Benefits
As part of India’s commitment to sustainability, these developments will contribute to reducing carbon emissions significantly. The expected decrease of around 42 crore kilograms of CO2 is akin to planting 2 crore trees, highlighting the role of railways as an energy-efficient mode of transport. Furthermore, the initiatives will help lower oil imports by approximately 8 crore liters, supporting the nation’s climate goals and reducing logistics costs.
