DRI Seizes 740 kg of Cannabis in Nationwide Crackdown
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has ramped up its efforts to combat the illicit drug trade, successfully executing eight major operations across India over the past two weeks. These initiatives led to the seizure of approximately 740 kg of narcotics, including cannabis and charas, alongside the arrests of 13 suspects under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
Among the significant operations was one on September 8, 2026, where DRI officers intercepted two trucks on the Old Dhamtari Road near Raipur. A thorough inspection revealed 61 packets containing around 375.95 kg of cannabis hidden within ten sacks in the loading area of the vehicles. The drugs and the trucks were confiscated, and four individuals were taken into custody.
Previously, on August 26, DRI officers made another significant seizure of approximately 124 kg of cannabis from a truck intercepted near Raipur, resulting in one arrest. The DRI’s operations reflect a consistent and effective response to the escalating threats posed by drug trafficking.
In a dramatic operation on September 5-6, DRI agents pursued and apprehended a truck on the Aurangabad-Patna Highway. During the interception, the officers faced violence, leading to injuries to one officer, while the truck driver escaped. A subsequent search uncovered 90 packets of cannabis weighing a total of 140.5 kg, which were also seized under the NDPS Act.
On September 1-2, another operation near Ludhiana revealed 67 packets containing around 69 kg of cannabis concealed within special compartments of a vehicle, resulting in two arrests. Meanwhile, on September 3, DRI officers apprehended three individuals at Gorakhpur Railway Station, finding around 5 kg of charas cleverly hidden in knee caps worn by two passengers and wrapped around their sarees. This charas was reported to have originated from Nepal.
Additionally, over the last 15 days, DRI operations at airports in Hyderabad and Bengaluru resulted in the seizure of 24.6 kg of high-grade cannabis from three passengers arriving from Hanoi and Bangkok, leading to three further arrests. These coordinated operations demonstrate DRI’s commitment to disrupting the narcotics supply chain via multiple transportation methods, including concealed loads in vehicles and passenger baggage.
