Gadkari Proposes Graded Driving Licence Points System: Traffic Violations May Result in Point Deductions
Soon, every traffic offence will impact a driver’s licence in India. The government is set to implement a graded points-based system for driving licences, as announced by Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. Under this system, repeated traffic violations could lead to the suspension or cancellation of a licence.
Gadkari revealed that plans are in place to establish 1,600 driving training centres nationwide. Currently, 24 centres are operational, with an additional 112 in development. Approximately 10 lakh drivers have already received training through these initiatives.
Graded Points System for Driving Licences
The new framework aims to differentiate between responsible drivers and those who frequently violate traffic rules. “My ministry is planning to introduce a graded point system in driving licences and vehicle registration certificates,” Gadkari stated at the 66th SIAM Annual Convention 2026. The proposed system will assign penalty points for various traffic offences. If a driver exceeds a certain point threshold, their licence may be suspended or revoked.
Gadkari explained that each offence will result in a deduction of points from the driving licence. Drivers with clean records may receive incentives, such as benefits from insurance companies, while habitual offenders will face stricter penalties. “This is exactly the principle behind this policy,” he noted, emphasizing the need for accountability among drivers who repeatedly break traffic rules.
Bharat NCAP 2.0 Coming Soon
The government plans to launch a new version of the Bharat NCAP programme in October 2027. This initiative will assess the entire safety framework of vehicles to address India’s serious road accident issues. Gadkari also announced a scheme aimed at reducing emissions from vehicles compliant with BS IV norms. A proposed emission-control device, costing around Rs 4,000-5,000, can significantly lower particulate matter and NOx emissions.
Bharat NCAP, introduced in 2023, is India’s official vehicle safety rating system. It evaluates passenger cars through crash tests, awarding safety ratings from 1 to 5 stars based on occupant protection. Gadkari emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to vehicle safety, given the high rate of road accidents in India. The country records five lakh road accidents annually, resulting in 1.80 lakh fatalities, with most victims aged between 18 and 36 years.
