Centre Expands Rs 35/kg Onion Sale to 19 Cities Amid Supply Concerns
The Centre has expanded its sale of onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg to 19 cities, including Delhi, amid rising prices due to recent crop damage from heavy rains. The government plans to supply 1,000 metric tonnes of onions to Delhi, where retail prices have surged to approximately Rs 50-60 per kg. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on consumers and ensure access to affordable onions through fair price shops and mobile vans.
Mobile Vans to Distribute Onions
In Delhi, one mobile van will operate in each of the 13 districts to sell onions at the discounted price. These vans are designed to reach areas where residents may struggle to access fair price shops. Similar mobile sales are also taking place in Lucknow, Varanasi, and Jaipur, while consumers in Noida can purchase onions through NCCF outlets and mobile vans. The Delhi government is committed to preventing any onion shortages and is closely monitoring both availability and pricing.
Preparations for Potential Price Increases
This intervention follows a review meeting on August 25, which assessed the availability and pricing of onions and sugar in Delhi. The meeting concluded that there was currently no shortage of these commodities. However, the Delhi government is prepared to take action if prices continue to rise. Should the need arise, the government plans to procure onions and sugar from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) to maintain supply at various locations throughout the capital. The Delhi government will cover transportation and related costs for these commodities.
