New Rail Link Boosts Connectivity Between India and Nepal
In a significant development for cross-border connectivity, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, alongside Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated the gauge conversion and electrification of the Nepalganj Road-Nanpara-Bahraich rail section. This 56.15-km long section has undergone a transformation to broad gauge and electrification, with an investment of approximately ₹730 crore. To celebrate this milestone, four existing train services were extended to Nepalganj Road, enhancing travel options in the region.
The event began on a somber note, as attendees paid tribute to the victims of the recent floods in Nepal, observing two minutes of silence. Union Minister Vaishnaw expressed deep concern over the situation across the border, emphasizing the strong cultural ties between India and Nepal. He extended condolences to the families impacted and highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to provide assistance, including special train arrangements for passengers affected by the disaster.
Chief Minister Adityanath also conveyed his sorrow regarding the natural calamity, noting its impact not only on Nepal but also on many in India. He recognized the importance of the new rail section, which integrates the Nepalganj Road-Nanpara-Bahraich track into the broader railway network, thus fostering improved connectivity for areas including Bahraich, Risiya, and Nanpara.
Enhanced Train Services for Local Communities
To further enhance accessibility, the Ministry of Railways has approved the extension of several long-distance train services to Nepalganj Road. These include the Varanasi–Bahraich Express and two pairs of Gonda–Bahraich trains. As a result, passengers in the region will enjoy direct rail access to major cities like Gonda, Gorakhpur, and Varanasi. This change addresses a longstanding demand from locals, facilitating easier travel for employment, education, and trade, especially benefiting border residents from Nepal.
A Boost for Economic Development in Bahraich
The gauge conversion project in Bahraich is poised to significantly impact the region’s socio-economic landscape. Improved railway connectivity will facilitate the movement of goods and people, boosting trade, employment opportunities, and tourism. Access to wider markets will empower local businesses and enhance economic ties between the border community and larger urban centers.
The electrification of the rail line is another key element of this initiative, as it transitions operations toward electric locomotives, reducing reliance on diesel and contributing to lower carbon emissions. This shift aligns with Indian Railways’ commitment to creating an energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable transport system.
Minister Vaishnaw noted that comprehensive strategies are in place to fortify the railway network throughout Uttar Pradesh, especially in the Purvanchal region. He highlighted ongoing work like doubling existing lines and the anticipated introduction of high-speed rail connections, which would significantly reduce travel times between major cities.
The enhancement of the Nepalganj Road-Nanpara-Bahraich rail section signifies a pivotal step in improving border region connectivity in India.
