India Unveils First Green Forge for GM Crop Research
In a groundbreaking achievement for agricultural science, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has inaugurated the first-ever “Green Forge” Complex at the National Agri-food & Biomanufacturing Institute (BRIC-NABI) in Mohali. This innovative facility represents a significant milestone in the advancement of genetically modified crops, enriching India’s biotechnology landscape.
Speaking at the National Conclave on BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment), Dr. Singh emphasized the pivotal role of the Green Forge facility, equipped with controlled simulation chambers designed for the cultivation and experimentation of genetically modified crops. These chambers will allow researchers to create diverse environmental conditions to better understand the adaptability of various crops.
Dr. Singh explained that the facility’s simulation capabilities include the ability to adjust light quality, humidity, and temperature, providing an ideal environment for studying the growth of genetically modified crops. This advanced approach aims to help scientists identify suitable locations for new crop varieties by assessing their performance in varied settings.
The minister elaborated on the challenges faced when introducing genetically modified varieties, particularly the necessity of determining optimal cultivation sites. By replicating different environmental scenarios in a controlled environment, Green Forge addresses this critical need, thereby facilitating more effective agricultural planning.
Highlighting the sophistication of the facility, Dr. Singh noted that the integration of artificial intelligence and advanced simulation technology within Green Forge can streamline research processes, unlocking new avenues for agricultural and medical research.
As part of the broader transformation in India’s biotechnology sector, Dr. Singh reported that the country’s bioeconomy has surged from $10 billion to $200 billion, attributing this dramatic growth to enhanced collaboration between the private sector and government initiatives.
The minister outlined that the BioE3 initiative is increasingly prioritizing industry-ready manufacturing, bridging the gap between research and practical applications. He underscored the importance of aligning scientific pursuits with industry needs to maximize research outcomes.
Furthermore, Dr. Singh mentioned the establishment of 22 manufacturing hubs aimed at supporting start-ups, SMEs, and researchers, in addition to the National Bio-Foundry Network that fosters collaboration and innovation across specialized facilities.
In his remarks, the minister also pointed to the advancement of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) projects, estimating around 38 supported initiatives within the Department of Biotechnology. This integrated approach aims to tackle industry emissions while enhancing bio-manufacturing processes.
Emerging sectors in biotechnology, including sustainable aviation fuels and space biotechnology, were also highlighted. Dr. Singh noted ongoing collaborations with ISRO on life-science experiments, expanding India’s genetic research initiatives.
Lastly, the minister called for enhanced institutional collaborations within close-knit clusters, particularly in regions like Chandigarh, where institutions focused on biotechnology, medicine, and agriculture could work together to foster innovation and interdisciplinary learning.
Dr. Jitendra Singh concluded by expressing confidence in BRIC-NABI’s potential to become a leader in the biotechnology revolution, particularly within agri-biotechnology, ultimately linking these advancements to India’s objectives of a net-zero economy by 2070 and self-reliance through Atmanirbhar Bharat.
