US Labor Department Adjusts Employment Growth Downward by 79,000; Private Sector Sees 178,000 Job Cuts

US employment growth for the year ending March 2026 has been revised downward by 79,000 jobs, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This adjustment represents a decrease of 0.1 percent in total nonfarm employment. The private sector experienced a more significant revision, with employment figures adjusted down by 178,000, also reflecting a 0.1 percent decline.
The BLS report indicates that this preliminary estimate stems from the annual benchmarking process, which compares current employment statistics with data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. This census utilizes mandatory state unemployment insurance tax records from nearly all employers, providing a more accurate employment count.
The BLS noted that the size of this adjustment falls within historical norms, with annual benchmark revisions over the past decade averaging an absolute change of 0.2 percent in total nonfarm employment. The bureau emphasized that the preliminary figure illustrates the discrepancies between two independently derived employment counts, each subject to its own errors.
Revisions varied across different industry sectors, with some individual series showing larger percentage changes than the overall nonfarm employment figure. The BLS explained that this is typical, as more detailed industry estimates tend to have greater statistical sampling errors.
The current official establishment survey estimates remain unchanged by these preliminary figures. The BLS stated that the final adjustment will be released in February 2027, coinciding with the publication of the January 2027 Employment Situation news release.
