Government Calls for Collaboration to Boost Rural Water Innovation
In a bold step towards enhancing educational engagement and knowledge sharing, the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation (DDWS) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti is urging States and Union Territories to collaborate with local colleges and universities to document innovative practices from the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM 2.0). This initiative aims to harness field-based learning, thereby improving rural drinking water systems across the country.
Since its launch, Jal Jeevan Mission has played a pivotal role in transforming the rural drinking water landscape. The mission has spurred the development of various best practices, especially in areas like community involvement, sustainability of water sources, management of water quality, maintenance operations, adoption of modern technologies, and decentralized governance.
Academic Collaboration to Document Innovations
To fully realize the potential of these innovations, States and UTs are encouraged to collaborate with local academic institutions. Their tasks include studying and documenting successful case studies that emerge under JJM 2.0. The findings of these studies are to be shared through various channels such as academic journals, reports, newsletters, and online platforms, paving the way for data-driven knowledge exchange and replication in different regions.
Student Engagement Through Tours
Moreover, the initiative focuses on student engagement by suggesting that local academic institutions organize tours for Higher Secondary and Senior Secondary students. These excursions will take students to key water supply sites, including Multi Village Schemes, Water Treatment Plants, and advanced facilities featuring technologies like Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and Internet of Things (IoT) setups.
Goals for the Future
By September 2026, the program aims for each district to conduct at least one student tour and publish one documented case study or best practice in partnership with local educational entities. Through these efforts, JJM 2.0 not only strives to foster a culture of field-based learning but also aims to broaden the visibility and accessibility of effective rural water supply practices to ensure a sustainable future for rural water security.
