Surprising Shift: The Odyssey Exits IMAX After Impressive Rs. 90 Cr Earnings and 43% Occupancy on Day 40
For 40 days, “The Odyssey” has captivated audiences across India, achieving remarkable success in 34 IMAX cinemas. The film’s performance remained strong even in regular theaters, but its IMAX earnings were particularly impressive, continuing to draw crowds well into its sixth week. However, this impressive run is set to conclude with the release of “Toxic,” starring Yash, on August 26.
IMAX Showings and Audience Demand
A source informed Bollywood Hungama, “Toxic is carrying tremendous buzz and moreover, it is an IMAX release. Hence, its distributors asked for all the IMAX shows.” Despite the impending competition, “The Odyssey” has demonstrated extraordinary staying power. The source noted that even on the last day of its IMAX run, August 25, many shows were sold out. “Of course, the discounted rates played a part. But when viewers are turning up in such large numbers on the 40th day, it is a feat,” the source added.
Warner Bros, the distributor for “The Odyssey,” requested just one IMAX show to accommodate ongoing demand from August 26. Unfortunately, this request was denied as the distributors of “Toxic” insisted on taking over all IMAX screenings. However, there is a silver lining: the IMAX screen at Broadway Cinemas in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, will continue to showcase “The Odyssey” with two shows at 11:30 am and 11:00 pm, while “Toxic” will be screened at 7:40 am, 3:10 pm, and 7:05 pm.
Box Office Performance
“The Odyssey” has amassed approximately Rs. 184.23 crores in India over its 40-day run, with nearly Rs. 90-91 crores coming exclusively from IMAX screenings. This means that around 50% of the film’s total earnings in India have been generated through the IMAX format. Notably, the film collected over Rs. 1 crore on 33 of its 40 days in theaters. On its final day in IMAX, it earned Rs. 71 lakhs from that format alone, with total collections across all formats reaching about Rs. 83 lakhs. The occupancy rate for IMAX screens on August 25 was a notable 43%.
An industry insider remarked, “Had The Odyssey been allowed even one show on each IMAX screen, it had the potential to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark from IMAX alone. It would have been a record difficult to beat for years to come.” The insider also suggested that “The Odyssey” might return to IMAX after a week or two, which could give it another chance to reach the Rs. 100 crore milestone. However, they cautioned that once a film exits IMAX, it risks losing its momentum.
