Brent Crude Oil Prices Rise Over 1% as Traders Anticipate Hormuz Reopening
Oil prices increased by over 1% on Monday amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude rose 1.32% to $84.65 a barrel, while WTI crude climbed 1.04% to $78.99 a barrel as of 7:30 am IST. This uptick follows a significant decline of more than 7% last week, driven by expectations that Iran and Oman were nearing an agreement to restore shipping through the vital waterway.
Shipping Lane Agreement in Limbo
Iran and Oman are reportedly close to finalizing a shipping-lane deal, but Tehran is demanding additional concessions from Washington. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that the agreement is in its “final stages.” However, the new shipping lanes will only be utilized once the U.S. meets Iran’s conditions, which include compensation, an end to sanctions, and a cessation of military threats.
Despite the progress in negotiations, direct talks between Iran and the U.S. have not occurred. Araqchi indicated that communications are being conducted through intermediaries, as Tehran refuses to engage with Washington while it perceives the U.S. to be violating an interim agreement signed in June.
Regional Tensions Impacting Oil Security
The uncertainty surrounding Hormuz is compounded by recent attacks involving Saudi Arabia, another key oil producer. The Iran-aligned Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for an attack on Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery. The Saudi energy ministry confirmed a fire at the facility but reported no injuries and did not disclose the cause of the blaze.
The Houthis have also targeted shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, further heightening concerns over oil security in the region. Last month, the group announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, citing a response to what they termed a Saudi siege on the Houthis in Yemen. Riyadh has denied these allegations and continues to support Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
Additionally, the United Arab Emirates’ ADNOC reported that 15 of its vessels have come under attack while transiting through the Strait of Hormuz since the onset of the conflict.
