New Eco-Educational Hub Highlights India’s Botanical Heritage
In a significant move to bridge the gap between science and society, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for various governmental sectors, inaugurated the CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute’s (CSIR-NBRI) innovative ‘Eco-Educational Hub,’ named ‘Prakriti Gyan Dham,’ at the Maharishi Parashar Bioresource Centre in Banthra, Lucknow. This pioneering facility aims to showcase successful scientific technologies and their practical applications to the broader community.
Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of making scientific advancements accessible beyond laboratory walls, urging greater use of digital and social media platforms. The focus is on ensuring that farmers, entrepreneurs, students, and industries can easily access scientific solutions for various livelihoods. He also highlighted the necessity of enhancing cooperation among different departments and ministries to maximize the societal benefits of scientific innovation.
Innovative Features of the Eco-Educational Hub
The Eco-Educational Hub stands as a testament to the fusion of scientific research, environmental education, and cultural heritage. This one-of-a-kind facility serves as a living repository of India’s vast botanical and cultural legacy, offering interactive experiences for students, researchers, and the public alike.
Central to the hub is the PAaVan Path, an interpretive trail that guides visitors through curated plant collections from various ecological zones. Additionally, the Indian Heritage Garden showcases historically significant trees, including the Bawan Imli Tamarind and the Mother Dussehri Mango Tree, with technology such as QR codes offering insights into their historical and botanical importance.
Promoting Biodiversity and Community Engagement
Another striking element is the Vibhav Enclave, dedicated to India’s rare and endangered plants, raising awareness about biodiversity loss and conservation needs. The Bhairav Enclave highlights the officially designated plants of various states, emphasizing their ecological and cultural significance.
The Bamboosteum section features numerous bamboo species, promoting the material’s versatility as a sustainable resource for various livelihoods and environmental benefits.
Linking Science with Society
At the launch event, several technology transfers were announced, showcasing the hub’s commitment to bridging scientific research with industry. Notably, an herbal formulation for male reproductive health and several plant-based products aimed at promoting women-led entrepreneurship were introduced.
Dr. Jitendra Singh called for scientific institutions to actively share their achievements with the public, not only as a communication exercise but as a means to foster awareness about innovations that can create economic opportunities. He praised the CSIR-NBRI for turning plant science research into practical applications for the wider public and emphasized the need for blending traditional knowledge with modern scientific approaches.
