The Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd. (TRIFED) proudly presented “Tribal Weaves of India” at the RISA Flagship Store in New Delhi. This event marks the 12th National Handloom Day, celebrated on August 7, 2026, and showcases the vibrant diversity of India’s tribal textile traditions under the banner of RISA: Timeless Tribal.
Emphasizing Sustainable Livelihoods
The opening ceremony featured remarks from Smt. Ranjana Chopra, Secretary of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. She underscored the critical need to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for tribal communities. Chopra articulated that enhanced market linkages are vital for these communities to carve out a niche in the evolving textile industry and to satisfy the aspirations of a broader clientele. She accentuated that tribal textiles represent centuries of indigenous knowledge and cultural identity, reiterating that initiatives like RISA play a crucial role in safeguarding these legacies while expanding market access and improving living conditions for artisans nationwide.

Shri M. Rajamurugan, Managing Director of TRIFED, elaborated on RISA as a premium brand launched by the Ministry, aimed at preserving India’s tribal weaving and craft traditions while bridging connections with discerning consumers at home and abroad. Rajamurugan emphasized that RISA focuses on portraying tribal textiles and handicrafts as premium products by marrying authenticity, quality, and modern design. The event featured a thought-provoking panel discussion titled “What Makes Tribal Weaves Timeless?” moderated by Smt. Asha Baxi, a prominent figure in the fashion sector. Esteemed panelists included craft revivalist Smt. Jaya Jaitly, designer Shri Gaurav Jai Gupta, textile artist Shri Gaurang Shah, and fashion designer Ms. Anju Modi, among others. They engaged in rich conversations about preserving traditional knowledge while embracing contemporary design methodologies, emphasizing the collaboration between artisans and industry stakeholders to keep tribal weaving traditions vibrant and significant in today’s market.
Showcasing Exquisite Tribal Textiles
The event showcased an array of unique GI-tagged weaves, such as Kotpad Cotton, Tussar Silk, and exotic handicrafts from various Indian regions, including Longpi Pottery from Manipur and Warli Art from Maharashtra. Notable Indian fashion designers contributed their collections, integrating textiles sourced directly from tribal weavers into their designs.
Honoring Master Artisans and Cultural Heritage
The festivities included the recognition of Tribal Master Artisans, along with curated walkthroughs of the tribal textiles on display. Live demonstrations of Warli and Gond art offered visitors immersive experiences of India’s rich tribal artistry and heritage.
