Government Launches Initiatives to Support Pregnant Women’s Health
In a proactive move to enhance maternal health outcomes, the Government of India has launched several initiatives aimed at improving the care, nutrition, and welfare of pregnant women. These programs are part of the National Health Mission (NHM), focusing on delivering timely benefits and quality healthcare to expectant mothers across the country.
One of the standout programs is the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), which guarantees free deliveries, including cesarean sections, for pregnant women in public health facilities. This comprehensive coverage includes free medications, diagnostics, nourishment during hospital stays, and transportation services. Benefits extend to infants under the age of one, ensuring a health-focused approach right from birth.
Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) facilitates routine, quality antenatal check-ups at no cost, scheduled monthly for all expecting mothers. The program has been enhanced through the Extended PMSMA strategy, which particularly supports high-risk pregnancies with financial incentives and additional health visits.
Furthering support, the Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) initiative ensures dignified and respectful healthcare for all pregnant women and newborns, devoid of any service denial. The government is also focusing on postnatal care, addressing essential health risks and supporting women through the collaborative efforts of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs).
In terms of financial assistance, the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) offers a cash incentive of ₹5,000 directly to the beneficiary’s bank account to ensure that mothers receive support during their maternity period. This scheme can provide up to ₹6,000 for eligible beneficiaries, encouraging healthier delivery practices.
To tackle malnutrition issues, the Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 program aims to provide comprehensive nutrition for pregnant women and children under six. The initiative includes revised nutrition norms aimed at improving the dietary quality and diversity of food available to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and young children.
In her statement in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Anupriya Patel, articulated the government’s commitment to transparency and the effective delivery of healthcare benefits. This will be facilitated through a multi-layered framework incorporating regular assessments and independent reviews to ensure that maternal health services are being implemented effectively.
To further enhance outreach, the government is leveraging technology through the Poshan Tracker, a digital tool that allows real-time monitoring of beneficiaries. Additionally, measures such as the Nominee Module ensure continuity in receiving essential nutritional aid, particularly for pregnant women unable to collect their allotted rations.
Overall, these concerted efforts by the Government of India mark a significant step towards improving maternal health and ensuring that pregnant women across the nation receive the support and care they need during this critical time.
