NHRC Launches Online Internship for Aspiring Human Rights Advocates
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India kicked off its two-week Online Short-Term Internship Programme (OSTI) today at Manav Adhikar Bhawan in New Delhi. The initiative aims to engage university students in understanding human rights and empowering them to become ambassadors for the Commission. NHRC Chairperson, Justice V. Ramasubramanian, officially inaugurated the programme, which saw participation from 100 students out of 2,036 applicants selected from various academic disciplines.
Highlighting Human Rights and Global Issues
During his address, Justice Ramasubramanian emphasized the fortunate circumstances of India’s youth, who live free from the conflicts that plague many parts of the world. He pointed out that basic human rights, such as access to food, education, and shelter, are accessible to them, contrasting this with the plight of millions affected by armed conflicts and displacement globally. Citing the Global Peace Index 2025, he revealed that approximately 130 armed conflicts are currently ongoing, resulting in over 122 million forcibly displaced individuals and nearly USD 20 trillion in global economic damage.
Empathy through Engagement
Justice Ramasubramanian described the internship as an important method to sensitize and engage the young participants about human rights issues. He expressed hope that even a slight increase in empathy and compassion among interns would signify success for the programme. He encouraged all present to seize the opportunity to enhance their understanding and commitment to human rights.
Learning from Experts
NHRC Member, Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, elaborated on the program’s structure, which includes lectures from eminent subject matter experts. He referred to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, stressing that the right to life with dignity is fundamental. He urged the interns to apply the knowledge they gain throughout the program for personal growth and social benefit.
Inclusivity through Online Format
The NHRC Secretary General, Shri Piyush Goyal, highlighted the advantages of conducting the internship online, noting that it removes geographical and financial barriers, thus broadening access for students nationwide. Over the next two weeks, the interns will interact with distinguished speakers and gain insights into the NHRC’s operations. Goyal emphasized the goal of nurturing conscientious citizens who advocate for human dignity and engage in protecting the rights of those around them.
A Comprehensive Curriculum
Joint Secretary, Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, provided an overview of the internship curriculum, which includes approximately 30 lectures on crucial human rights topics from 20 guest speakers. These speakers represent a spectrum of fields, including government officials, academics, civil society members, and human rights defenders. The interns will participate in virtual tours of significant institutions such as a police station, Tihar Prison, and Asha Kiran Shelter Home, enabling them to understand real-world challenges. Additional activities include a book review competition, group research presentations, and a declamation contest.
