CSIR-CRRI Unveils Indigenous Vehicle for Urban Road Assessment
The CSIR–Central Road Research Institute (CSIR–CRRI) in New Delhi has achieved a remarkable milestone in promoting sustainable urban infrastructure. On this occasion, the institute unveiled its newly acquired Indigenous Network Survey Vehicle (NSV), aimed at enhancing the assessment of urban road conditions. The event, which took place at the CSIR–CRRI Main Building, was officiated by Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar, Director of CSIR–CRRI, and marks the start of field surveys for a new project focusing on the paving and greening of urban roads in the Delhi NCR region.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Dr. Thallada Bhaskar, Director of CSIR-AMPRI in Bhopal, along with various heads of departments, senior scientists, officials, engineers, and staff members from the institute. The NSV is set to play a crucial role in performing detailed assessments of urban roads across the National Capital Region (NCR), providing scientifically-driven insights essential for road asset management and the planning of sustainable infrastructure.
During the ceremony, Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar described the launch of the indigenous Network Survey Vehicle as a testament to CSIR–CRRI’s dedication to pioneering advanced technologies for road infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of scientifically evaluating current road conditions to plan resilient pavements and enhance urban mobility while reducing maintenance costs. This aligns with CSIR–CRRI’s broader goal of fostering eco-friendly urban development.
Project Details and Objectives
The surveys are part of the larger initiative, titled “Implementation of the Standard Framework for Paving and Greening of Urban Roads in Delhi NCR,” which CSIR–CRRI is executing in collaboration with the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Government of NCT of Delhi. The project operates under a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and adheres to the guidelines set forth by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), targeting improvements in urban road infrastructure and addressing dust pollution throughout the NCR.
This comprehensive initiative entails several key work packages. These include developing spatial standards and road cross-sections, implementing greening measures to mitigate road dust, establishing Road Asset Management Systems (RAMS) for better maintenance strategies, and promoting innovative approaches to road construction.
Advanced Technology Integration
The Network Survey Vehicle is equipped with cutting-edge technologies such as high-speed laser profiling, ultra-high definition (UHD) imaging, GPS/GNSS positioning, automated pavement distress mapping, and data analytics powered by artificial intelligence (AI). These features allow rapid, non-intrusive assessments of diverse road conditions, reducing traffic disruptions significantly.
Data collected through these surveys will facilitate the prioritization of maintenance work, enhance pavement design processes, improve drainage planning, and bolster road safety measures. Ultimately, this project aims to significantly decrease dust emissions and elevate the quality of pavements, promoting sustainable urban mobility across Delhi NCR.
As the event concluded, the successful flag-off of the Network Survey Vehicle and the launch of the field survey initiatives underscored CSIR–CRRI’s commitment to delivering innovative scientific solutions that support national infrastructure development.
