Oil Prices Drop Over 6% as Trump’s Iran Discussions Renew Optimism for Reduced Middle East Tensions

Oil prices fell sharply on Monday, with WTI crude dropping 4.75% to $80.65 a barrel and Brent crude declining 4.40% to $84.06 a barrel. This decline comes as hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran overshadowed last month’s significant rally. The market remains jittery amid ongoing uncertainty over negotiations and security risks along critical shipping routes.

Brent crude futures initially plummeted more than 6% to $82.41 after U.S. President Donald Trump announced talks with Iran would take place on Monday. This announcement followed his decision to cancel a planned attack on Iran, aiming to facilitate an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address concerns over Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. Last month, both benchmark contracts had surged over 20% due to renewed tensions between the U.S. and Iran, alongside attacks on tankers near Oman, which heightened security fears and deterred shippers from entering the Gulf.

While optimism for a potential agreement has emerged, doubts linger regarding the success of diplomatic efforts. IG market analyst Tony Sycamore noted that the focus is on whether this week will mirror the previous one, where hopes for a deal faltered as Iran maintained its stance and continued to leverage its control over the Strait, potentially through aggressive actions against U.S. interests or tankers in the region.

In shipping developments, two Saudi oil tankers successfully crossed the Bab el-Mandeb Strait over the weekend, although movement through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed following reports of vessel attacks. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported three additional tanker attacks since Saturday. Meanwhile, OPEC+ announced on Sunday an increase in its oil production quota by approximately 188,000 barrels a day starting in September, completing the rollback of one layer of voluntary output cuts. Despite this planned increase, the market has seen minimal impact due to export disruptions in the Gulf, Russia, and Kazakhstan caused by the ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.
