IFS 2024 Batch Graduates Celebrate Convocation in Dehradun
The Convocation Ceremony for the 2024 Batch of Indian Forest Service (IFS) probationers was held on Saturday at the prestigious Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA) in Dehradun. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, served as the Chief Guest, presenting certificates and medals to the successful trainees at the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Yadav congratulated the probationers on their accomplishments during the training at one of India’s foremost forest academies. He expressed his optimism that as these officers enter their most productive years, they will significantly contribute to realizing the vision of a developed India by 2047, coinciding with the nation’s centenary of independence.
Challenges Ahead for New Officers
In his address, the Union Minister highlighted the major challenges that lie ahead, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and desertification. He emphasized the necessity of employing innovative approaches and modern technologies, alongside community participation, to effectively tackle these issues. Yadav stressed that artificial intelligence and advanced technological tools should not only help in data collection and analysis but also enable the development of empathetic, practical solutions.
The Essence of Leadership
Shri Yadav further articulated that ethics and efficiency form the foundation of successful public service. He urged the probationers to cultivate high moral standards, efficient time management, and the ability to deliver maximum benefits with limited resources. He encouraged them to evolve into not just capable administrators but true leaders who inspire, exhibit compassion, and drive positive transformation in society.
A Call for Continuous Learning
Concluding his speech, Yadav remarked that the hallmark of a great officer is being a good human being. He encouraged the newly graduated officers to embrace self-assessment and self-awareness throughout their careers, reminding them that their journeys would be unique. Continuous learning and exemplary contributions to society and the nation, he emphasized, should remain their guiding principles. He also extended warm wishes to the trainees and their families.
IGNFA’s Legacy and Achievements
Earlier, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Khajuria, Director of IGNFA, presented a report outlining the institution’s history and its pivotal role in training Indian Forest Service officers since 1938. He noted that this year, 111 officers completed the 20-month program, which included 109 Indian probationers and two from Bhutan. Notably, 75 officers achieved over 75 percent, earning the Honours Diploma.
Khajuria highlighted that the training emphasized forestry, wildlife management, environmental governance, and leadership development, with nearly 45 percent of the training consisting of hands-on fieldwork, study tours, and adventure activities across various ecological regions. Additional special elective courses and practical exercises in forest management and wildlife conservation were also integral parts of the program, guided by renowned experts.
Ceremony Highlights
The ceremony recognized outstanding probationers with awards and accolades, with Ms. Pratiksha Nanasaheb Kale from the Rajasthan cadre being honored as the batch topper. The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry, including Secretary Tanmay Kumar and other prominent figures from environmental and forestry organizations.
This occasion not only celebrated the achievements of the graduating officers but also set a tone for their future roles in advancing environmental conservation and enhancing the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities in India.
