Odisha Accelerates Water Conservation Efforts with ‘Catch the Rain’ Campaign
Odisha is ramping up its water conservation initiatives following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to action during the 135th episode of Mann Ki Baat on June 28, 2026. The state’s Catch the Rain 2026 campaign aims to transform public awareness into concrete actions, focusing on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and the revitalization of traditional water bodies.
Empowering Communities as Water Stewards
Utilizing a multi-faceted strategy, the campaign emphasizes community outreach, behavioral shifts, and institutional collaboration. To date, officials have conducted 968 Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities throughout the state. These activities have included street plays, folk performances, and engagement programs centered on rainwater harvesting and groundwater conservation. Khordha district led participation with 230 IEC activities, while Angul followed with 124. Other districts like Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Nabarangpur, and Subarnapur also played significant roles, each hosting 62 activities, showcasing the campaign’s extensive reach and robust public involvement.
Schools have become pivotal partners in this endeavor, with educational programs designed to deepen students’ understanding of groundwater science and rainwater systems. This knowledge is vital in nurturing a generation of informed citizens who can champion water conservation efforts within their communities.
Turning Awareness into Action
In addition to raising awareness, the campaign has successfully established 905 rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge structures statewide. This includes 849 Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting (RRWH) systems—21 within government buildings and 828 in private residences. Noteworthy district achievements include Ganjam with 330 RRWH structures, followed by Khordha with 121 and Mayurbhanj with 94. The results reflect a shift from awareness to active participation, with households engaging in local water management.
Moreover, efforts include constructing recharge shafts that strengthen the connection between surface rainfall and groundwater resources. This infrastructure is critical in enhancing irrigation capabilities and local water supply, especially in areas facing high groundwater demand.
Revitalizing Traditional Water Systems
Alongside building new structures, Odisha is also focused on restoring traditional water bodies. Under the State Plan’s Improvement to Tanks and Minor Irrigation Projects Scheme, the state has undertaken renovations and desilting of 98 tanks across all 30 districts. This restoration enhances storage capacity, promotes efficient runoff retention, supports irrigation, and facilitates groundwater replenishment, thereby ensuring rural water security and adaptability to climate change.
Building a Collective Movement for Water Security
Odisha’s Catch the Rain campaign is clear evidence of how effective community participation can propel water conservation. By integrating awareness, behavioral changes, institutional support, and the restoration of traditional water bodies with the creation of recharge infrastructures, the state is establishing a comprehensive framework for sustainable water management.
