12th National Handloom Day to Celebrate India’s Weaving Heritage
The Ministry of Textiles is set to commemorate the 12th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2026, hosting a grand celebration at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre (RBCC) in New Delhi. This annual event honors India’s vibrant handloom heritage and acknowledges the invaluable contributions of the handloom weaving community to the nation’s cultural and economic landscape.
Esteemed President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will preside over the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event will also feature prominent figures including Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, and Union Minister of State for Textiles, Shri Pabitra Margherita, along with key officials from the Ministry of Textiles.
Awards and Recognitions
The celebrations will shine a spotlight on the winners of the prestigious Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and the National Handloom Awards for 2025. A total of 22 awards will be bestowed, including three Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and 19 National Handloom Awards, honoring exceptional weavers for their impressive craftsmanship and commitment to preserving India’s handloom traditions.
Commemorative Initiatives
In addition to the awards ceremony, four commemorative postage stamps will be launched, celebrating the diversity and richness of India’s handloom weaving traditions. Two notable publications, namely “Earth. Root. Thread – Aal Dyed Handloom Textiles of Central India” and the “Handloom Awards Book 2025,” will also be unveiled during the festivities.
A special exhibition displaying award-winning handloom products will be organized, offering attendees a chance to appreciate the artistry of this ancient craft. Live demonstrations of traditional Kani weaving and Wall Hanging weaving will provide a unique insight into the techniques and skills that define India’s handloom sector.
Significance of National Handloom Day
On 7 August, coinciding with the anniversary of the Swadeshi Movement initiated in 1905, the National Handloom Day serves as a reminder of the handloom sector’s key role in empowering artisans and supporting sustainable rural employment. With over 35 lakh individuals employed in this sector—70 percent of whom are women—handloom weaving not only enhances livelihoods but is also crucial in maintaining India’s rich textile heritage.
Since its establishment in 2015, National Handloom Day has provided a platform to celebrate the dedication and skill of India’s weavers while reinforcing the Government’s commitment to promoting and developing the handloom industry sustainably.
