Bihar’s Rail Capacity Get Major Boost with New Multitracking Project

In a significant enhancement to rail infrastructure in Bihar, Indian Railways has greenlit a multitracking project for the 29 km stretch between Danapur and Fatuha. This ambitious undertaking, with an estimated cost of ₹976 crore, aims to alleviate congestion on one of the busiest sections of the Patna rail corridor, paving the way for a substantial increase in both passenger and freight services.

Comprehensive Upgrades to Rail Lines

The project encompasses several key components aimed at modernizing the rail network. New third and fourth lines will be constructed between Danapur and Patna, as well as between Rajendra Nagar and Patna Saheb. In addition, further expansions will occur between Patna Saheb and Fatuha. These enhancements are expected to significantly reduce congestion, cut down delays, and bolster on-time performance throughout the Patna region.

Increased Train Services and Freight Capacity

Once operational, the project is forecasted to introduce an additional 22 passenger trains and 18 freight trains daily. In terms of freight capacity, the upgraded lines will allow for the handling of an extra 5.2 million tonnes of freight traffic each year, greatly benefiting logistics and commerce.

Part of a Broader Initiative

This initiative is part of a larger plan to quadruple rail services along key routes, including those connecting Delhi, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Patna, Kiul, Bhagalpur, Khanna, and Howrah. This particular corridor has been earmarked under the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor of Indian Railways, emphasizing its strategic importance for logistical efficiency. The upgraded rail section will also support the upcoming 2120 MW thermal power plant in Chausa, Buxar district, which will rely heavily on rail transport for its bulk supply needs.

A Commitment to Development

The approval of this project underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to expanding capacity on high-density routes, strengthening logistics for the energy sector and industry, and fostering socio-economic growth in Bihar. With these advancements, the rail network is poised to become a key enabler for regional development and enhanced connectivity.
