FIFA Halts $4.2 Billion World Cup Stake Sale Amid Global Backlash

FIFA has scrapped its plan to sell a minority stake in its commercial operations, including the FIFA World Cup, after facing significant backlash from football federations and internal dissent. FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Friday that the proposal would not proceed, citing the divisions it created within the global football community.

Infantino stated, “Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place.” He emphasized that FIFA’s mission is to unite and improve the sport.

The proposal, which aimed to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling a 20% stake in a new commercial entity managing FIFA events, faced immediate resistance. UEFA, the governing body for European football, condemned the plan, claiming it threatened the sport’s integrity. They voted unanimously to boycott FIFA tournaments unless the proposal was withdrawn. Other confederations, including CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), also opposed the initiative, collectively representing 143 of FIFA’s 211 member associations.

The backlash revealed internal conflicts within FIFA. Senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned, calling the proposal “a bad deal for football.” Reports indicated that FIFA Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour expressed to staff that they had been “deceived” by Infantino, labeling the initiative as “a project of one person.” In response to the unrest, Infantino pledged to engage with stakeholders in the coming weeks to explore alternative methods to bolster global football, particularly in developing nations.

The abandoned proposal involved creating a $20 billion subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to manage the commercial rights to the World Cup and other FIFA competitions. Thrive Eternal, an investment fund linked to Joshua Kushner, was expected to lead the investor consortium, raising concerns about potential political influence. Infantino is set to seek re-election as FIFA president next year, amid speculation that CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani may challenge him.
