India Hosts Workshop on Trade and Sustainable Development
The Department of Commerce, part of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, held a comprehensive workshop on “Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD): Evolving Policy Landscape” at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi today. This initiative gathered senior officials from the government, trade negotiators, and representatives from various sectors including industry, academia, think tanks, and the legal community to discuss the crucial relationship between international trade and sustainable development.
This workshop marks the first in a series of intended consultations aimed at enhancing India’s strategic outlook on Trade and Sustainable Development. This is particularly relevant within the context of shifting global trade norms and ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.
Key Highlights from the Workshop
Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal addressed the audience, highlighting that Trade and Sustainable Development is a multifaceted policy issue that necessitates a holistic approach. He stated that this approach should integrate trade, industry, sustainability, and competitiveness. As sustainability regulations and unilateral environmental measures increasingly shape global trade practices, Agrawal pointed out the importance of fostering an environment that supports industries in embracing sustainable methodologies.
Agrawal emphasized that early adjustments in this regard would not only boost India’s competitiveness in the global market but also better position the nation to navigate the changing international trade landscape.
Thematic Discussions
The workshop was structured around four key thematic sessions. These included discussions on India’s domestic carbon framework, global trends in TSD provisions found in Free Trade Agreements, the evolving international carbon regulatory framework, and strategic avenues for shaping India’s future approach to Trade and Sustainable Development.
Throughout the sessions, attendees explored the increasing significance of sustainability measures such as carbon markets, carbon pricing mechanisms, and carbon border adjustment measures. They examined sustainability standards, regulatory cooperation, and how these factors could impact India’s trade and industrial competitiveness.
Conclusions and Future Directions
The event wrapped up with key discussions about India’s evolving sustainability architecture. Topics included the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), the Indian Carbon Market, the Extended Producer Responsibility framework, and the country’s accreditation and conformity assessment systems. The conversations emphasized the need to leverage domestic initiatives to enhance India’s readiness for emerging sustainability-related trade frameworks and to guide its future trade negotiations.
